what's your definition of STTN?

Mine is going to bed at 8 or 9 and waking up at  6 or 7. What do others feel that STTN is? My best friend's LO sleeps an 8 hour stretch (from 8-4) and she said he was sleeping through the night. I sooo don't agree. What do you think? So far my LO is not STTN yet. She still wakes up after 7 or 8 hours to eat and get changed. We continue to be hopeful.

Re: what's your definition of STTN?

  • I think the official definition is 5 hours in a row, so that's what I go off of. I dream of that day ....

  • I would agree with your friend. I think 7-8 hours straight would be sleeping through the night.

ETA: I thought the official definition was 6 hours in a row.

  • from what i have read... 6 hours is considered sttn
  • officially its 5 hours
  • I just got this from Babycenter.com. 'Not that "sleeping through the night" means a full night of uninterrupted sleep for you. "'Through the night' is defined as from midnight until five o'clock in the morning," says Judith Owens, a pediatrician and director of the Pediatric Sleep Disorders Clinic at Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.'

  • Well bump you should have 2 badges... 1 for STTN and 1 for MSTTN (momma sleeping through the night). Not that it matters b/c I'm a freak and wake up about every hour to make sure she's breathing:-) Now BFF is gloating. But congrats LO, you have been STTN and I didn't even know it!

You aren't a freak! I do that too. Not every hour but often enough

  • So, to be really dense - - is it 5 hours of sleeping (say 12-5) or 5 hours between feedings (feed at 12, asleep by 1:15, awake at 5).

Just curious - we aren't close - but I'm curious.
  • Officially it's uninterrupted sleep from midnight to at least 5 am.
