Do you wake your lo from a nap or no?

I've read somewhere that some people wake their child from naps, especially if they are late afternoon naps, so that their lo doesn't get too much sleep before bedtime. I've always let mine sleep til she woke up on her own. What do you do?

  • I don't like waking her. If we have something to do & need to be there at a certain time, I'll wake her, but I'm not happy about it.

  • No, I never have. I might consider it if he still happened to be sleeping at 4:30pm for some reason. Bedtime is 7:00pm.
  • Never ever. Did I mention never? :)
  • The only time I've woken him is for a pedi appt.

  • I had to wake him one time to get to an appointment on time. Otherwise, I let him wake on his own. People can either deal with us being late to things or not. I don't care. His sleep is more important to me. My brother is always mad at us for being late. I let G sleep on his own schedule, not other peoples.
  • I wake him from his morning nap if it's going to go longer than an hour and a half. Otherwise he won't nap in the afternoon and he gets super cranky. As long as his am nap isn't too long, he'll nap another hour and half or two hours in the afternoon.

  • I wake DD from her late afternoon nap everyday. She sleeps terrible at daycare so when we get home at 4 I always lay her down and let her sleep from 4 till 5pm and then she is still ready for bed by 6. If I did not wake her she would go to bed for the night at 4. Otherwise I would not wake her and I don't on the weekends.

  • I only wake her if we have to be somewhere.

  • If his second (or only) nap gets to 8:30PM, I wake him up. His bedtime is 10:30PM and he needs at least two hours of awake time - usually with a lot of activity - to be tired enough to fall asleep on time. Otherwise, he can sleep as long as he wants. It's pretty rare that he naps that late/long anyway.

  • I don't wake her unless it's a situation like you describe.  We don't let her go down for her last nap past 5:30 (she's elminating this nap anyway), and wake her up if the nap runs past 6:30.  That gives her two hours to be awake in the evening before bedtime.

Otherwise, I avoid waking her up unless absolutely necessary (appt we have to go to or something along those lines).

  • Nope.  I suppose I might now that she's older and on a schedule.. but I still don't like to wake a sleeping baby.. she is still growing, what if she isn't feeling well and needs the extra sleep, etc.

I nanny for a 4 month old and the mom has me wake her up after just an hour and a half, no matter what.  It seems so mean to do that to such a young baby, and I've tried mentioning the growth spurts, illness, etc... but she's the mom (and my boss) so I do it..  it makes me so sad for the baby every time  :(
