We're about to set out on a whopper of a car trip.
16 hours each way and a 3 hour each way side trip in the middle of the 2 weeks we'll be gone.
Oh... and did I mention DH isn't going so it'll just be me, the 3 yr old and the 2.5 yr old?
Getting cold feet.
Please share your best tips and tricks.
(and yes... we bought the DVD player yesterday....)
Re: Any car-trippin experts around?
Is it a road trip for that purpose, or is flying an option? Lots of alcohol!
No real advice other than to buy new toys and maybe give them each a new toy every few days? Like, Target $1 bin stuff. The old ISpy game, get new music, new DVD's, drive when they sleep (early morning, late night)... And bribery of any sort. Like stopping for ice cream.
My ultimate trick is booking 3 plane tickets.
Christmas 2011
We did a cooler with sandwich stuff for picnics along the way. It worked great! We just replenished the ice and sandwich stuff as needed.
We also took breaks every 2-3 hours and let the kids run around.
Toys R Us has a lap desk thingy for car seats that my BFF used and said it was great for her road trip. The kids could color, play cars, eat a snack on it etc.
dvd player
lots of new cheapie toys like from the dollar store or dollar bin @ target
lots of their favorite snacks & drinks & dont expect them to eat "meals"
lots of stops especially if you have 1 in diapers...diapers tend to leak more if they are in the carseat the entire time. And let 'em out to run.
We drove 17 hours to Myrtle Beach last year when Michelle was 2.5 yrs old...my only issue was her diaper leaking because I wasnt stopping enough to change her.
Their favorite blanket and stuffed animal. This may make it easier for them to sleep in the car.
Storynory.com has free mp3's of different stories for kids. I am going on a 5 hour drive with DS tomorrow and plan to download a few.
Paper and stickers. I seriously don't care where the stickers end up as long as it keeps DS entertained. He also picked out his own mini clipboard and is excited to use it on our trip.
Our drive isn't nearly as long as yours is, so good luck!
