NBR: Dog Smell

For those of you with dogs, especially those that shed like our bulldog does, what do you do to combat the smell?  I hate having people over because our family room just stinks like dog. I've tried Febreeze, but our bulldog had an allergic reaction to it.

  • We have a Jack Russell, she doesn't really smell, but DH bathes her a good bit. I always have candles lit as well, and they're different scents, so maybe that masks it? I can't stand spray air fresheners, they make me sneeze nonstop. lol

  • We have a boxer so same type of hair. So far we have avoided the smell issue in our new house, but I know what you are talking about. For the most part are dog is a inside dog so he is not outside running around all day and then coming in dirty.

We bath him when he is dirty, clean his feet when he come in the house on days that it has been raining. We vacuum our house about every other day, which includes the couch. Bed linings are washed often.

I have heard of people putting baking powder down in the carpet and then vacuuming it up.

Also just normal care of your dog with him (clean his ears, give him greenies or other bone to clean his teeth)

  • I've been using the Arm and Hammer Oxy Clean carpet powder that you sprinkle before vacuuming.  It seems to work ok so far.

  • I have a doberman that had a horrible smell to her too.  I feel like I was constantly lighting candles and spraying things.  At the advice of the pets board I switched her food to Blue Buffalo from Eukanuba and the smell almost disappeared.

I still light a mild candle when guests are here and I bath her regularly, but the food made a huge difference.
