Pregnant after a Loss

birth: meds or no meds?

Since we've discussed both sides of the c-section issue, wondering where you all stand on vag births with drugs or without?

I'm planning on going without - i figure my body was built to do this, and in general I don't like using any kind of meds, and have eliminated most chemicals from my food and household products - so I figure it's only fair to my body and my babys to not introduce more chemicals than I need to when it comes to birth.  But it is certainly tempting to take something to take the edge off of the pain!

This! I don't see any reason why it would be good for the baby if I suffer through birth.

  • Hi,

I just posted on our first Bradley Class.  I'm hoping to go natural vag as well.  I agree with all of your reasons!

  • Ideally I want to do this drug free.  I know it's better for the baby as well.  However, I do reserve the right to change my mind if I have a really long and difficult labor and feel that I need them.

  • butting in again:  i had an epidural w/ nathan and it was fine.

however w/ Wyatt i went all the way from 2-10cm in a matter of about an hour and if they would have let me i probably would have pushed him out.  however, the pain is so incredible that you can not imagine until you are in it.  since i was already 10cm i would have pushed him out but there would have been no way if i took more than an hour to get to 10cm.

the epidural is wonderful.  :o) GL!

  • I'm not taking any analgesics (the drugs that make you feel drunk/loopy).  I want to be coherent and I hate the feeling of losing control.

As far an an epi, it will really just be a game time decision.  I'm not against it, but I'd love to avoid a catheter if labor is going quickly.  If I feel like I can't handle it, I will just get the epi and I won't feel bad about it at all.

  • I went through natural childbirth, not by choice.  I just did not get that the cramps were leading up to labor.  And by the time my water broke, the contractions were unbearable.  At the time, it was the most painful thing that I have ever been through.  And I felt like they kept telling me to push out the baby, and I kept feeling like I could not do this.  But looking back at it, I am glad I did it.  My baby got out safely--that is the most important thing.

  • From my experience I've found that meds do almost nothing for me to relieve the pain.

Demerol makes me very drowsy, nauseous and I was vomiting.  Morphine was useless, as was the gas.  This time I'm going to suck it up (I hope) and do nothing.

I'm totally against epidural, (way to scared of the needle and the complications) so that just isn't an option for me, plus I like to go as natural as possible.

  • I had a five hour labor with DD. I went into it totally wanting a drug-free birth, but then I felt the pain. However, by the time the anesthesiologist arrived, I was pushing her out. So I ended up with what I originally intended and was really glad I did. However, I was totally unprepared for the pain. That being said, I 100% want to go drug-free again since I know I can do it and will hopefully have a fast labor again. The pain was temporary (for me. If my labor were any longer, I would've been bending over for that epi!) and overwhelming, but manageable in some way. Hard to describe. Good luck with whatever you choose (or whatever gets chosen for you!).

This exactly.  I've been chatting with the doula that does my massages, and getting tips and tricks for managing pain.  DH and I will probably also meet with her after childbirth classes start on the 21st.  She's not teaching our classes (she's independent from the hospital), but she will be able to give us another persepctive on pain management and also help DH help me get through it without drugs.  Although I've heard both sides of the story with drugs & breast-feeding, I would prefer not to have to wonder if that slowed down the process for baby girl and I.

  • I'm shooting for epi free and reserving the right to change my mind.  I agree that our bodies were made to do this.

I also have a strange resistance to most drugs.  I laugh at valium, while it puts most people out, I've driven to the store and shopped on Vicodin (BTW - that's apparently DUI... who knew?? Glad I didn't get caught).  Xanax does nothing and I can dance on Ambien... though I won't remember doing it if it's CR.  My father also has this odd resistance.  I wonder if I would be one of those people who says 'the epi did nothing for me!'  That being said, I want to avoid it if at all possible.
