A whole lot of awkward inside!

I can't believe I forgot to tell you guys this story from my appointment yesterday!

I was stilling in the waiting room at my OB's office, and then what looked to be a mother and daughter came in and sat down right in front of me (facing me). The daughter looked about 14-15 years old and was chatting with her mom the whole time.

Then I went in for my appointment, and left. Just as I walked out the doors of the office and headed towards the elevator to leave the building the mother and daughter that was sitting in front of me in the waiting room were also leaving. They got into the elevator with me and so did two other people.

It was a small elevator so it was kind of packed, and I was standing shoulder to shoulder with the daughter. Just as the door shut the mother started another conversation with the daughter:

Mom: I just wanted to let you know that whatever you decided to do is fine with me.

Daughter: Yeah, I know (as she is texting, and didn't even look up from her phone to respond).

Mom: I just wanted to make it clear to you that if you wanted to end it, I'm ok with that.

Daughter: Yeah, but the thought of going 9 months without my period does sound really nice, soooo I dunno yet.

Mom: True, but whatever you decided is fine with me.

Daughter: Yep.

Then the elevator door opened and I walked out.

Holy awkward standing in there! Can I just say that if I was the daughter's age and in the daughter's shoes, and my mom brought up the conversation about my options in an elevator full of people I would have been mortified! They were talking all nonchalantly in the elevator just like they were chatting about some girl at school when they were in the waiting room. And it kind of struck me odd that the daughter didn't even look concerned at the least, just having a conversation with her mom in an elevator as she was also texting someone.

The whole situation just struck me as quite awkward Tongue Tied

Disclaimer: I was not uncomfortable because abortion was mentioned, just the situation in general struck me as awkward.

I'm glad the only reason she may keep her baby is so she doesn't have her period for 9 months.  Indifferent

Disturbing... especially her reasoning re: not having a period for 9 months.  WTH is wrong with teenagers that they are so nonchalant about this stuff?  And mom... really lady??

Wow. I would feel awkward as well. There's so much wrong in that situation it makes me sad.

First of all, they're talking about this baby like it's a puppy that maybe they should or shouldn't get. "Yeah, having a puppy around to take places in my purse might be kinda fun" "Well it will pee on the carpet, so maybe you shouldn't get it.."?

Second, they're talking about a subject that should not be discussed in a crowded elevator but in private. ?

That was my much younger cousins reason, she was 17, now 21 with 3 kids and no father figure for any of them!

Its a difficult thing teen pregnancy but my mom talked to me took me to the GYN and left the room so I could do what was right! I had DS at 21, off of BC because we had 2 MC while on BC, one of them I had to be hospitalized because of the amount of blood that I lost. So even tho I was young DS was no planned but not a opps surprise.

There is SOOO much education out there its sad but this will forever be an issue!!!

i blame shows like 16 and pregnant for making it okay to discuss things like this in public, and for the daughter's nonchalance about the entire thing.
  • Options

    Wow, that would be weird.

I would have turned around rubbed my belly and said, "that's why I did it." Confused

Some one should tell that girl... that

    cramping you still can get
tender boobs worse than period tenderness
that you still will end up wearing a panty liner at times
the bloat is worse than when she has a period
and stays with you not to mention just gaining weight...

I hate my periods.. but full out admit that a period is easier than pregnancy!

    Wow about the period.

Interesting conversation. From my own experience (as a mother of a 20 y.o. daughter), you never know for sure what they are really thinking. They don't like to open up to their parents, especially in front of a bunch of strangers. Maybe the daughter was being sarcastic?

I was pregnant with DS when I was 16, I was so...embarrassed over the whole thing. I wouldn't tell anyone I knew that I was pregnant, let alone a bunch of random strangers.

ETA: I was embarrassed over the pregnancy and the circumstances, it did not and does not refelct on how I feel about DS. Oh and this pregnancy is with the same man, who I have been happily married to for 2 years.

Is it possible you misheard and they were talking about choosing a birth control that would stop her period for 9 months?

(Yes, I realize that's may not be the case - but I think I'll be much, much happier if I just pretend!)

Yes they are going to do it! If we atleast teach them ways to protect them selves and others it is well worth it!
