Maternity Clothes Essentials?

Hi Ladies,

So what would you consider maternity clothes essentials? I'm on a budget, and am dreading buying maternity clothes... due November 6th and I think I need to bite the bullet this weekend and go buy at least some jeans and a pair of shorts. I see that old navy is pretty reasonable... but what do you guys think I should buy as "must haves"? Any place other than Old Navy/Target that has cheap but still cute/fashionable clothing?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Re: Maternity Clothes Essentials?

  • Definitely jeans, black pants, and shorts...were a must for me.  I usually bought tops from places like Forever 21, H & M, and Target, not materity.  You'd be surprised that some of the stuff they make now works really well as maternity clothes, and looks very fashionable.

I have some maternity clothes that I'm looking to sell (very cheap!). Email me if you're interested christawandrie @ gmail.com.

  • Check Kohls & Ross for the basics as well - I found a few of my base pieces there.

It also really depends on what you do for a living as to what "essentials" will be. I work from home so I had no one to complain if I wore stretchy fold over pants, skirts, shorts, etc on a daily basis, meaning I was able to wear most of my non-maternity bottoms with simple maternity tops. I picked up most of my tops at Old Navy on sale & Ross.

  • I agree that it definitely depends on whether or not you have to go to work in a more professional environment.  If you do, black pants and a couple of skirts are probably a must.  I hate Motherhood, but I got some really inexpensive stuff there that carried me through for work and weddings, including an awesome $30 black maternity dress that could be dressed up or down.

I got some maternity clothes from JCPenny as hand me downs, and like them so much I ordered more.  They are actually having a good sale right now:

I've gotten by with a few pairs of maternity work pants & skirts.  I spent a little money on Gap work pants with DD that have also gotten me through this pg - which is something to consider if you're going to have more than one.

Everything else has been non-maternity for me.  I've had great luck with the jersey dresses and skirts and longer tops.  Target & Kohls have been my go-to for the basics.

  • Yoga pants. Maternity jeans. Non-maternity tanks, etc. Cardigans (some cute cheap ones at Nordstrom BP right now in all colors). Comfy shoes. And...a good pedicure.

  • I agree with other posts, but will add basic t-shirts to the list.  I work in an office and pair maternity pants/skirts/capris with simple t-shirts.  Another favorite item is black leggings.  I got mine from Old Navy and love them.

What size do you wear?  I have a ton of maternity stuff to sell. . .

  • I agree with the previous posts. I did not buy jeans because I could not find any long enough. I ended up buying the bella band from Target. It was great for my jeans and work pants. It essentially holds them up. The only other maternity things I bought were yoga pants, shirt from target, a cardigan from gap. Everything else was in a bigger size. JcPenneys has great long flowy dresses. I wore the heck out of them.
  • Thanks Ladies!

I work from home too so like you guys suggested, I could probably get away with a few casual items like jeans. The leggings suggestion was a good one-- I need to go to old navy and check those out!

  • My sil was pregnant exactly a year ago so she gave me a lot of her stuff. She gave me a pair of gap maternity jeans that look good! i love them they have that panel that goes overyour belly and not just an elastic at the waist. I find that way more comfortable. A lot of her stuff was gap and I love all of it the fit still makes me look like I have a figure.

I have bought my own stuff from Ross and motherhood brand. I've bought tops there for 9.99, maternity leggings for $20 and a bathing suit for 30. My Target seems to always be sold out of the sizes I want so I'm bummed about it. I did get a pair of maternity shorts there that I love.

Would you buy used stuff on craigslist? there's always tons of ladies selling stuff on there.
