Babies: 9 - 12 Months

WWYD? Sorta baby related

I went to my old university today.  I was in town getting an opinion from a doctor I trust (story will follow tomorrow, we are finally moving forward btw) and I just had to stop by my university. I couldn't resist.

I brought LO in the stroller.  I could not get around anywhere.  Ramps and elevators were impossible to find.  There was a profound lack of of ramps. Even employees could not find them.  When I asked (yet another) employee, he told me that he has had so many people complain about the lack of access of these necessities.  He hasn't said anything to the higher ups.  He works in the book store.

I'm lucky -- I only had a stroller and tons of nice people to help me carry the stroller up and down the stairs.  However, what about the people that are on crutches or in a wheelchair??  I'm kind of pissed and super offended!!  It's a necessity and a right.

I used to work for the Services for Students with Disabilities as a proctor.  I was thinking of writing a letter, stern but not harsh.  It is just so unacceptable.  Besides, the laws are in the favor of the people who need extra assistance.

I refuse to accept "lack of money" as an excuse.  My education cost $100k and this is so important!!!  Cut back somewhere else -- help the people that need assistance getting to class!!!!  (When I went there, they built a state of the art building.)

Would you write a letter?  What would you say?  Would you call?

Thanks so much.

  • I would write a letter vs call incase it gets forwarded to someone in a different dept. I would explain the predicament of yesterday and offer some solutions. No one likes to hear a complainer. Offer to help organize a fundraising event or something.

Living in Europe, if there are stairs, usually a man will help you up or down, without even asking. However they DO NOT have the same disability act as we do in America so the accessability into shops is nothing like the states. Is your university a private one?

Fantastic idea.  You're right, nobody likes a complainer.

I will write a letter and ask for a follow up.  I don't have time to organize anything.  I live an hour away, I work, have a baby (duh, lol) and I have significant health issues that require my attention over this.

However, I will find an organization near the campus that can help the university before I write the letter so I am offering solutions.

    Thank you so much!!!

BTW -- LO is adorable and I love the siggy pic!

  • Definitely write a letter.  The more they hear it from people, the more they will listen, hopefully.  I noticed the same thing when I went to visit the elementary school where I used to work.  It took me forever to find a way to get in the school that didn't require stairs.
