I don't really care about the PIP- ironic? probably so. But I do want to point out that there is such a HUGE difference in how people are viewing this situation in the North than along the coast. I'm not saying they don't get it or are insensitive. It's just so different when you're actually living in it.
I live 20 minutes from the Gulf, and oil is already on land here. It's not a beach, it's marsh. You can't just take off the top layer of sand and be done. It will take YEARS to literally wipe each piece of grass to get the oil off.
All these people that are preaching to just stop drilling don't understand living here either. Our seafood/fishing industry is already partially doomed. They want to ruin the only other thing we have?

All of this is why I can't "simmer down" or see the joke or irony in a sign from a BP gas station.
Hurricane season has me on pins and needles. Way more than usual. And I'm slightly further north than you are.
I don't think anyone is down playing the situation in the Gulf. I lived down there for several years and have friends that were just recovering from Katrina to only have this come along. Its the top story on every news station and people are generally pissed off. The OP has said she didn't mean haha funny but ironic.
I don't see any malicious intent in the OP, it is ironic, it makes me laugh-not in a Seth Rogan+Jonah Hill kind of way, but in a: "Wow, that is so ironic that BP has literally bent the gulf over and @#$%'d it up and they are doing nothing to help out-yet they want me to clean up when I mess up their toxic station!" sort of way.
Re: Haha, BP fail PIP
I agree. I can't find the humor.
I guess ironic is the word I should have used. Obviously I don't think the actual oil spill is funny. Goodness people, simmer down.
