Re: need some advice from a veterinarian?
we're going to have savannah for awhile this summer, and I want to find out if her tick collar is safe for me, or if we should switch her to something else while she's here, and bathe her before i handle her...
or if I only need to avoid the collar.

Hiya there...
I guess I am the local board vet... You should ditch the tick collar (most contain Amitraz which is a class c drug). It would be much safer to use a local spot on product (such as Frontline). Have someone else apply it, and then avoid petting/contact with the area until dry (or wait 24 hours to be safe).
Also keep the grass short, as that will discourage ticks too...

Frontline contains Fipronil- which is a much safer drug (and actually used in pregnant dogs). Now if you feed large amounts of it to rats repeatedly (the studies) it can cause some hormone fluctuations, but mainly it acts as a neurotransmitter blocker in insects (it has negligible effects in mammals which is why it is so widely used and effective).
If you want to be completely safe then skip all insecticides and do tick checks nightly- but I personally am comfortable with Frontline . Once absorbed into the hair follicles of your dog- you should be fine (hence the 24 hours)- versus the collar continually excretes amitraz.

cheesy fact sheet- but a quick overview.
