Babies on the Brain

If you CD

was your husband on board with it from the beginning?  If not, how did you convince him?

We've got enough disposables to last us for another few months at least, but after that I'd like to do the Jillian's Drawer's CD trial, and I'm considering getting the GroBaby diapers on BabySteals.  DH says, "Do what you want, but I don't want to deal with cleaning up poo."

Re: If you CD

  • The money was the number one reason DH agreed to find out more about it. We went to a CD workshop a few months ago and learned a lot about the different ways to CD. He agreed to do AIOs and pockets, but not prefolds/fitteds. He just didn't want to take the extra step of putting a cover on after the diaper. How lazy can you get? But he agreed to part of it, so I saw it as a win.

As far as the 'cleaning up poo'... obviously we haven't done it yet, but we're both looking at it like there is going to be poo, pee, and puke to clean up no matter what, so what's a little more. We are really driven by the savings though, to be honest. I am definitely looking forward to the other benefits as well, but that's the one we are most focused on.

  • He doesn't care, but he doesn't change a lot of diapers either, even when he's home. Because I was reviewing diapers, I have one or two of a bunch of different brands, which all go on differently. I totally get why that is hard for him to pick up, and I don't mind. He does lots of other stuff. When LJ is with him for long periods of time he usually uses disposables.

If we just had one brand, I don't think it would be the same, he'd figure it out. Get some of the flushable liners for poop and it will be fine, he just has to dump it in the toilet.

  • DH seemed skeptical at first, but has always been supportive.  He didn't think I'd actually stick with it but has really been great now.  He changes her as much as I do.  I promised him I'd do the diaper laundry and that has worked.  He installed a diaper sprayer for me and even tries to spray the poo diapers if he ends up changing one.
  • He wasn't against it at all. Why we didn't go forward with it from the beginning is beyond me. Thanks to Ozy and her reviews, we've switched. His first question was "what about the poop".  He's been fine, he's changed a few diapers and he's a trooper.  His only request is if we can go back to the disposable wipes. He doesn't like my cloth wipes.  If that's what it takes to keep him letting me use cloth, then so be it.

  • My husband was on board pretty much right away, although he sometimes uses disposables at home because he thinks that cloth diapers have more blowouts (he's at home with Jack all day).  I disagree on that point.

My argument against disposables has been that I know what it is like to wear a huge, krinkly, gross plastic maxi pad.  I can only imagine that a disposable diaper is even worse.  I wouldn't wish those on anyone, especially a sweet little baby.  So cloth it is. My husband was convinced, I think at least partly because he didn't want to hear any more about huge maxi pads.

  • FWIW, you're supposed to clean the poo out of disposable diapers AND CDs. And chances are there will be less poo w/ CDs because there are typically less blowouts.

    AWESOME.

We've got kind of the same situation with DH being home during the day. I'm going to go ahead and order the GroBaby diapers from Babysteals today.  If I can't convince him to do cloth all the way, then Abe can wear disposables or disposable inserts when DH is home with him.

I'll also try to sell the money savings and toilet sprayer angles.  I do most of the laundry anyway, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

    Thanks ladies!

That's something I actually didn't know until recently.  When we were discussing CDing last night I mentioned this to DH and he didn't know it either.  Right now we've still got EBF poos though.

  • We obviously don't CD yet, but I pitched it to my husband like this:

    1. Disposables take ~500 years to decompose.

    2. I would rather have poop in the toilet than in the trash.

    3. Money savings

    4. Earlier potty training.

    5. I do all the laundry anyway, so he won't have to deal with washing them.

    6. We can still use disposables on long/overnight trips.

After that, he was totally on board.

  • DH was not on board with cloth diapers at all!

So I looked into other options and found the gdiapers with the disposable liners.  I like that they are biodegradable but also disposable.

DH is ok with those so we're starting with them and we'll see where we go from there.

Do read some reviews on gDiapers before you go all-in on them.  They were the first "cloth" diapers I bought and they just didn't work for us.  Every single time we had a leak - I just could not get them to work.

  • So far what I have read has been good.  I'm only starting with two covers and the disposable inserts, so not a large investment at this point.

I know DH is not interested in fully cloth diapering her but this hybrid kind seems to be the way I can get him in.

I'll have to continue researching hybrid diapers.  Thanks for the tip!

That's what I started with.  If you end up liking them, I have a bunch of the disposable inserts that I can send you if you'd like them.  I feel guilty having them around and not using them.

GroBaby are hybrid and I've heard a lot better things about them.  pretty much everything I've read about gDiapers is negative. :(

  • DH was on board.  He thinks I'm a little nuts and turning a little crunchy, but he appreciates the environmental factor in particular, so he's good to go.  And I do 95% or more of the diaper changes anyway, so it only affects him occasionally.

The diaper trials are great.  We started with gDiapers (which, BTW, if you purchase at BRU can be returned if you dislike them), then went to BG AIO's, then to DreamEze, and now have a mix of DreamEze, GroVia, and Rumparooz.  If you really want to do it, the trials are great b/c it might take a bit to see which ones fit your LO the best, and that you like using/washing the best.
