something I don't understand

recently I have seen several people with their infant seats (as in the infant carrier type) forward facing.  How do people NOT KNOW that they should be rear facing?  But then I thought, how did I KNOW that it was supposed to be rear facing?  I'm guessing maybe I got that info from you guys?  From books?  Does it say on the car seat packaging????  I just don't understand how some people just do not know?

Re: something I don't understand

  • I'm fairly certain that the installation instructions are clear that you should NEVER install it forward facing.   So these morons can't read.  Or something.

  • also, when we left the hospital, a nurse had to check our carseat... plus every time we went to the pedi it was one of the questions they asked

    those people are stupid

  • This is just strange to me.  I believe the instructions say that it's rear facing.  Also, with Ethan, when we left the hospital, a nurse checked to make sure he was rear facing.  They did not with Jack, but the nurse knew we were second time parents so maybe that's why.  What's funny is I was flipping through the tv yesterday and came across a movie that looked to be from the 80s and in the movie, the infant car seat was facing forwards in the car and I laughed when I saw it.  Hard to believe that there are people out there that actually have their infant seat forward facing.

There was an early episode of Desperate Housewives where Lynette had Penny in the infant seat in the FRONT SEAT!  (At least it was rear facing, and a closed set with less liklihood of an incident.)  I think it would be so much easier if the baby was next to you while your driving, but OH MY GOD, I wouldn't do it!

  • Yep, I have seen this too and I really don't get it.  I mean, there are even stickers all over the damn thing that say REAR FACING ONLY- with a picture.  So yeah, I'm going with the moron theory.

  • Some people just do not get it...my cousin did this with her babies :(  I told her (and my uncle) that is should be rear-facing, and my uncle switched it around right then and there for her.  But the next time we saw them, she had turned it forward-facing again, saying it was easier to see him that way??!

  • I saw a Mom putting her 3mo into her car today and baby was forward facing! It clearly states in the manual that they should be RF. And, my pedi asks me. And, it says in a book I read about the first year. I think these parents are idiots and just want their child FF for their own personal benefit (being able to see them, access to them, etc.).
  • You know what, I will say that I honestly didn't really fully understand it until I was on these boards and someone posted that video showing the crash tests for both RF and FF.  And that little boy... the one with "internal decapitation."  O...M...G... scared the bejesus out of me and DH.  It still makes me nervous that Gavin is FF now at almost 2.5 year old.  I feel like we should go Swedish and keep him RF till he's 4.  Maybe they should show that video in the hospital before they let you go home- wonder if that would stop some of these parents?

  • The instructions are pretty clear about RF infant seats. Also our chicco says it on the base which way is suppose to be towards the rear of the car.

both of the pediatricians that we have had have always asked us at every doctor's apt if the car seat was rear facing.  So scary that parents just do this anyways...it confirms the statistics that most seats are installed incorrectly.
  • Oh we didn't have a nurse take us out to the car. It was a tech and he didn't look in the car or see us put the infant seat in. Maybe he figured we were smart enough to know I don't know.

  • I'm also going with the moron theory. We also had a nurse walk us out to inspect the carseat before letting us leave the hospital. If you want to see your baby, get a mirror...works like a charm!

  • we live in a multi family community and i watched a mother put her child in the lap of someone in the back seat last night!  i about fell over!
  • My DH says that he saw someone leave daycare the other day with their little hot rod car two door car.  One kid in car seat in back.  One infant in front seat but rear facing.  Is that even legal?  I almost lost it.
