Babies on the Brain

I may have idiotmotheritis

My baby is nearly 4 months old and I just realized, today, that her bathroom habits are not normal.  I'm still shocked at how I overlooked what normal was supposed to be + since she's my first kid, I didn't know anything else.  From what I'm googling (bad, I know) this has the potential to be a serious problem.

She's pretty healthy & happy as far as I can tell, so I'm telling myself it can't be that bad.  It isn't helping.

I'm going to try to get in with the pedi on Monday, but I feel like such a bad mom today.

Re: I may have idiotmotheritis

  • what do you mean by not normal?

  • What exactly is the problem?
  • Not yellow & seedy for a EBF baby.  They've *always* been a variety of other colors and *always* slimy (mucus, I guess).  I guess had a different vision of what "mucus" meant.

I ended up googling b/c she had some blood streaks the other day.  I did call the pedi about the blood, but they said it happens sometimes and to call back if it happened again.

I never knew how many pics of poop there would be on the internet, but the ones that match my kiddo in terms of color & texture seem to be the result of some not so great things.  :-(

  • please explain... "not normal"?

  • You are NOT a bad mom. This is your first child, everything she does is new and different but normal in your experience. I expect if she was breathing fire or flying you would notice that was abnormal, but how she goes to the bathroom is all new to you and therefore normal to you.

Sounds like a dairy intolerance. If you are BFing stop eating dairy.
  • from everything ive read, it sounds like a food allergy.  Probably milk

  • Oh and FWIW, I eliminated dairy in the very beginning at the pedi's recommendation when she extremely gassy/fussy.  They tested her stool for blood around 6 weeks, and it was negative.  No one said anything about the color/texture.

    Are you still off dairy?

    Yes

Probably another allergy then. I would do an elimination diet. DS has food allergies and I have been down this road before. Feel free to PM me if you want any more info.

  • Thanks, all.

A food allergy, I can work with.  Hopefully that's all it is and it is temporary.
Pedi's office this week it is.  I feel SO stupid.

    Ah, live & learn.

Have you read any articles in Kellymom.com yet? I know when Norah had green mucusy BM it was because she was getting too much foremilk and not enough fatty hind milk. To fix this, I fed her on the same side until that breast was drained (not flip flopping at each feeding every time). It helped out a lot. I also pumped off some of the foremilk when I was really engorged.
