Thanks for your prayers, all!! He is still in the NICU on oxygen and has started on the light treatment for jaundice, but they think that he will be
ready to do a trial period without O2 tomorrow, and he has started
rooting (for milk) and he may be allowed to take some milk by mouth
tomorrow, too (he's on IV nutrition right now, my brother said). All that is good!
And we have a name!! Alejandro Martin! I love it. I love that he will share the middle name with my son.
Thanks for the continued prayers.

Re: My new nephew has a name!
Yay! Here's hoping for continued positive updates for the little guy!
Congratulations on your new nephew!
I'm glad to hear that he's improving. Hopefully things keep going well and he gets to go home soon!

Tax bride, Love his name. The same thing happened to me my son was born 35wks 5days. He was in the nicu for 14 days. Now he is very happy, active, tall and healthy 1yr old. Sending good thoughts your way.
Hey thanks! It's always good to hear good stories like yours!! I will mention it to my brother, who tends towards the negative in his assessments (comes from being an ICU doctor and seeing the worst all the time).
I'm waiting to hear if they managed the trial period today without supplemental O2.
If you don't mind me asking, did you want to nurse him and if so, did you get to? I know that my SIL is chomping at the bit to nurse and is pumping as much as she can to keep it flowing, but they haven't let her yet. Just curious.

thanks! My brother told me that yesterday he got some of her expressed milk/colostrum by a feeding tube, and she is pumping and storing, so that's all good. Good to hear the NICU nurse's side of things!! Thanks again!

I'm glad to hear he is doing well. When I read your story, it reminded me of one of my coworkers whose grandson was born with a hole in one of his lungs. He also had to be in the NICU for a couple of weeks, but I believe he's doing much better and he's already home.
I wanted to nurse him but I couldn't. So I pumped and gave it to him by bottle. My son was also taken off foods for 48hrs because he had one(and I mean only one) blooded stool, when they did the tests to see if there was anything wrong with his gastrointestinal tract everything was fine. Because he was hooked to the monitor, just for observation I couldn't take him to a private room. I tried right before I left, and he latched-on. However, I only produced milk for a month and a half.
I hope this helps. One thing that helped me when I went home without him was the fact that I could call the NICU anytime at whatever hour I wanted(and I did) to check on his progress. If you have anymore questions just ask.
If you don't mind me asking what was the reason your nephew was born early. My son was born because I had a variant or HELLP Syndrome.
