Babies: 0 - 3 Months

I feel stupid asking, BUT here's a diaper question...

I feel really stupid asking this, but how do I know if I'm putting the diapers on wrong, or if they are just leaky? Every time DD is laying down and pees in her diaper, it comes out the top (on her back) or the sides. She is 7lbs 10ozs and wearing Huggies NB size. Should she go up a size, do Huggies just suck, or am I putting them on wrong? Here's a pic of the last one that leaked before I changed her. lol, I figured a pic might help since I have no idea what's wrong! Thanks ladies :)

  • IMO, Huggies SUCK.  I ALWAYS have leaks when I use them and NEVER do with pampers.  Curious to see what others say though.

  • I agree with PP - Huggies suck.  But, we didn't have much luck with any disposables.  The only time we don't have leaks/poop explosions is when we use cloth...

  • Huggies rock for us; but every baby is different.

Try going up a size or switch brands.  It also looks like the diaper is a little low in front to me.

  • We kept having leaks with huggies. We switched to pampers that were one size bigger and have had no leaks since, so I am not exactly sure if it was the huggies themselves - or the fact that we went up a size!
  • two things I've discovered

    1) Huggies are much leaker than any other diaper i've tried.

    2) Huggies tend to run much smaller than any other brand.  My baby was still in NB Pampers but needed size 1 huggies.

  • I agree with the PP. They look a bit small.

  • I go with Pampers all the way.  And with Pampers they tell you what weight is what size.  So NB is up to 8lbs, and then size 1 is 8-14lbs.  Try pampers NB, and get the ones with Dry Max, those work really well at soaking it all up...our little one goes through the night without a single leak and ends up with full and heavy diapers in the morning but no leaks!  If you find the NB are still a little too small, go for the size 1.  You can always tighten the sides, the only thing is it will probably go up further on her stomach which is not a big deal and might protect against any potential big BMs.

  • It looks like the diaper is really loose. I can see a good sized gap between LO's skin and the dipe. Can you try making it tighter? Other than that I'd say go up a size since the rise is so small. Maybe Huggies aren't good for your LO
  • Thanks so much!! I have size 1 Huggies so I'll try them, and have DH pick up some Pampers on his way home :)

  • We loved Huggies when DD was first born (7lbs 12oz) but she was pooping up the back of the newborn size ones! We put her in size 1s and they seem to be holding a lot better.

Even if they look a little huge, maybe try a bigger size.

  • Coming in a little late.  We've never had issues with Huggies.  And as PP's said, you need to go up a size.  It looks too small.

I agree pull them up really tight and snug and you shouldn't have a problem. I watched my MIL do it and I thought she was crazy but you have to pull them up so there is no sagging

  • I'm not sure if anyone else ever encountered this, but I  found when I switched from NB to size 1 diapers, my LO still had leaks occasionally. Her NB diapers were too small, but the size 1 were a little too big. Sometimes she'd leak at the top if it wasn't tight enough and sometimes at her legs. There was just a lot of space for her to move/shift around in the diaper. But unlike the NB diapers, it she wasn't wetting through them EVERY time.

This! My DS leaks with Huggies as well.  Can't use them.

  • I would go to size one if you are having leaks.  I love Huggies and have had no problems with them.  I only have problems with Pampers.  Every baby is different.

  • I went up a size early and that helped. Also the visiting nurse told me to make them really tight, much tighter than I was doing.  She said when its on you should only be able to snuggly put one finger inside the "waistband".  Its so tight our tabs always overlap in the middle.  I haven't had a leak since and I've used all different brands of diapers.
  • First, the diaper looks really loose around the waist. Try making it tighter around the waist and make sure that the gusseting around the leg is positioned correctly. I think the diaper looks ok size wise, I think if you just tighten it, you should be ok. However like other posters said maybe try Pampers also. I use Pampers but had some Huggies that a friend gave me and she leaked almost every time she wore the Huggies she leaked. My LO was in Pampers NB size until 8 weeks.

  • They look really loose to me as well. But since the rise is so low, try size one.

One HUGE thing I learned, was to "fluff the ruffles". The little ruffle-y things around the legs; make sure they are all pulled out and not tucked into the diaper. I've found that if they're tucked in even just a little bit, we had poop and sometimes pee coming out her legs.

  • I'll just add that I hated huggies when DD was a newborn- they leaked like crazy, but I tried them last week and I love them, who knows...maybe since she grew and her body changed they fit her right now.
  • I do not think it is because of the brand.  That diaper is way to loose and the ruffles are not pulled out.  Tighten it up, pull the ruffles out and it should be better.

Ive actually had alot of friends/family say the same thing...all my sisters (who have alot of kids each) said that huggies leaked and sucked for their newborn babies and pampers were great but by the time the kids were in a size 2 or 3 it was the opposite where huggies worked better...huggies leak on my DS and they gave him a HORRIBLE rash so we used the pampers drymax and havent had a single issue

Ahh... I was wondering about the ruffles. Wasn't sure if they were supposed to be in or out, so I was experimenting both ways. I feel like I should know this! Thanks :)
