Since we're talking Vit D...

I was just reading about this and wondering:  I take a vit D supplement myself everyday.  Once my baby comes will I need to give him/her drops?  Or will s/he be getting enough from BF?  (I'm fairly lactose intolerant and don't drink milk, plus I have lupus and need the additional D for my calcium supplement since the steroids weaken bones.  Yes, I'm a wreck.)  Thanks!

Re: Since we're talking Vit D...

  • Your pedi should tell you if they recommend it.  My pedi recommended I give DS TriViSol or Poly Vi Sol, both of which have other stuff in addition to Vit. D.  A nurse told me something that milk actually hinders absorption of iron and other vitamins, so they may not be getting as much as you'd think, making vitamin drops beneficial, but I've also heard that babies are born with a good supply of vitamins and minerals and don't need extras until they are about six months and can then get them when they start solids.
  • Our pedi recommended the same b/c DD only gets BM and it does not have a lot of Vit D or Iron and going out in the sun is not a good option during the summer! DD will open up her mouth now when she sees the dropper and takes it just fine. I hate the smell though!
