Confession: fed up with the nighttime cloth diaper

I LOVE my CDs.  I truly do.  We never have leaks during the day.  However, we haven't had a night without leaks in so long.  DS is a heavy wetter apparently, and also somehow has learned to pee out of gaps in the leg-holes...although I'm putting them on so tightly that there are little red marks on his thighs!  Typical is 2 diaper changes per night, so 3 dipes total from bed-time to wake-up, so it's not like I'm leaving him in one dipe for 10 hours...I've tried several different types, extra soakers, etc.

We went on vaca last week and had him in disposables for a few days.  No leaks and he slept longer at night b/c he didn't wake up with wet jammies.

Le sigh.

If you have suggestions for a great nighttime dipe, feel free to post them, but for tonight, he's in a sposie.  :-(

Re: Confession: fed up with the nighttime cloth diaper

  • What are you using?

Here's our set up - a BSRB or B4 fitted, stay dry liner, wool cover. That's it. The BSRBs are less damp on the outside in the a.m., but neither has ever leaked. They may be really wet in the a.m. if he's nursed a lot, but in 9 months of nighttime CDing.

  • Oh, I've never heard of a BSRB or a B4...I've tried: BG, FB pockets with extra hemp soaker, Rumparooz AOI, Happy Heiney's, and Thirsties duos (which have so far been the best, but he has outgrown size 1 and we don't have any size 2's yet).

So I googled the diapers you suggested...is BSRB a Bagshot Row Bamboo?  What do you recommend for a stay-dry liner?

  • Fitteds are your night time solution ;).  We use either B4's (Bububebe) or Goodmamas at night with a stay dry liner and a Thirsties cover or a wool cover.  I just cut up pieces of scrap fleece and use that for a stay dry liner.  My DD has recently been going 10-11 hours at night and nursing 2-3 times without a diaper change.  The diapers are usually quite wet in the morning, but we never have leaks.  Definately try a nice fitted, they are the best.

  • Try a BG double stuffed with two full sized inserts.

Yes, its Bagshot Row Bamboo. She stocks on Thursday evening (or at least she used to, it's been awhile since I've bought any), & you have to get them right then. For a stay dry liner you can just use fleece scraps or buy them at like Cotton Babies or something.

I use pockets & AIOs during the day but never for night - fitteds are bulletproof. Wool soakers also allow your LOs skin to breathe. I have a Wooly Bottoms one that I love & it was inexpensive - about $20. I have a couple of SBish wool soakers too, they work great!

  • Thanks so much!  We had some fitteds when he was really little....doesn't the whole thing get wet?  Do you have to line the entire diaper with fleece?  Thank you!!

  • Yes, the whole diaper does get wet if you ise it overnight.  I just use pieces of fleece about the size fo a dollar bill.  A tad wider and a bit shorter, but that's a good size reference ;)

  • I don't know how good you are with a sewing machine (or if you know someone who is) but I make a stuffable fitted with a microfleece inner that works great with a thirsties cover.  We rarely have leaks, and if we do it's almost always user error.  We stuff it with a hemp insert and a microterry towel (from the dollar store).  Also, you can put a cover over your pocket diapers and that might be a short term solution until you get some of these nicer fitteds pps mentioned.
  • we have an on/off thing with nitetime CD lately. there was a whole yeast thing. it doesn't matter.

tho not identical, this is pretty much what we're doing: https://www.theecofriendlyfamily.com/2010/04/whats-my-night-time-diaper-solution.html, maybe this would be worth trying since you say you already have BGs? those MF inserts are pretty much useless at nite for us.

  • Bububebes ::swoon:: DD1 STTN and we've never had a leak in one. And they are adorable!! They are by far my favorite diap.

ETA: We use them with Olive Jane covers.

  • DD is a heavy wetter and can make it 12 hours in her nighttime diaper with 1-2 feedings. First choice is a FB with 2 mf inserts and a hemp insert. That is bulletproof for us. If I don't have one, I use a prefold with a mf insert folded in the middle and a gCloth (fleece over hemp) laid on top with a wool cover. The cover will be damp, sometimes her jammies.

What CD are you using at night?  I'm trying to think of why they would only leak at night..... is there something about his jammies that pulls the CD loose or wicks wetness from around the leg holes?

  • We had the same problem. Eventually we gave up (for now anyway - we try nighttime CDs again every once in a while) and started using disposables at night. I felt kind of guilty about it at first, but DD is sleeping better and not having any leaks in disposables so I got over it fast! I know it might not be the most popular solution, but it works for us.

How do you fit 2 mf inserts and a hemp insert?!?!  I can only fit either 2 mf or 1 mf, 1 hemp into my fb....And I think that is what makes the leg-holes gap when he moves his legs in certain ways.  I haven't tried the prefold with an insert, I've gotta try that....

Do you sell these??  They sound fabulous...

  • Thanks Ladies, you have definitely inspired me to keep trying!!!  I'm going to get some bagshot row bamboo fitteds to start....does anyone have any good recs for nice used wool covers?  They are so dang expensive!!  And I'm worried that it will be a tough fit, my guys thighs are seriously chun-ky.

I'm still nervous that the wet against his skin won't allow him to sleep as long as those (damn chemical-laden) sposies.  I'll look into the stay-dry liner thing, but it doesn't sound like it covers the whole dipe....

And thank you ErinMSB; if it doesn't work and we decide to use sposies, I know I'm not alone!

  • We are in the same boat.  Our issue is that because of the nighttime heavy wetting, DS gets a diaper rash.  He never gets a diaper rash when he sleeps in a sposie.  I feel like I've tried everything.  I'm glad you posted this so maybe I can see something I might be missing since I too love CDing and hate having to use sposies just at night!

  • I failed at nighttime CDing.Once she no longer pooped at night (which was around 3 months) we started using Huggies naturals or 7th Generation at night.
  • We use Blueberry pocket diapers at night, with a bamboo insert and doubler.  DS STTN and we haven't leaked through yet.

He leaked through sposies.  I switched to these because they were BETTER than a disposable.  They're a bit more expensive (I paid $30 each) but I love them.

The cow print is SUPER cute and soft!

  • DD is a heavy wetter with chunky thighs and we use the Thirsties Duos (size 2) with an added hemp insert every night...she's in one from about 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. (2-3 nursings) and no leaks. Since you've written that you had good luck with the size 1 I'd suggest trying the size 2 and adding their additional hemp insert and see if that works for you.  GL!  I think Thirsites is having a sale in June too.
  • We use our BG AIO OS organics at night, but put two hemp doublers under the fabric loop.

When he pees out is the diaper and are all of the soakers soaked?   Could you have a repelling issue?

Also, there have been two times that M has peed out of his diaper consistently for 2-3 nights in a row.  I'm never certain if its a build-up/repelling issue or just a change in something else, but for us it rarely lasts long.  However, those washes I'll generally do a few more hot washes/rinses just in case.

Wooly Bottoms are good, inexpensive option. I have one that I love & it only cost about $19.

The stay dry liner basically lays across the middle part, but that's enough to keep Ari dry & happy. Without it, he does wake when he feels wet. You could lay one on each side too, but you may not need it.

  • i was thinking we might try some recycled wool. basically woolies made out of upcycled sweaters and such.

there is a long list of sellers here: https://allaboutclothdiapers.com/recycled-wool-is-in-season/

Can I just say that I'm so excited to have an excuse to buy more adorable CD's!!  I looked up the Blueberry and they are adorable!  (And I bought a really really fun bagshot bamboo fitted tonight, yay!   Can't wait to go to the diaper store and pick out a new cover for it!)

  • WyoGal ? It?s definitely not a repelling issue ?.  Unless: does laundry soap build-up repel?  It could actually be that (if that?s the effect build-up has) ?

Married2Mr.Wright ? good excuse to buy more dipes, yay!  Actually, I just went to the diaper store last week to get a Thirsties size 2 and the only non-girly color they had was white, so I bought it and one of the snaps broke in the wash, so I never even got to use it.  Off to the diaper store again, I suppose!

Webmistress and e_b_r: thanks for the links.

Bb80: lol!  And if DS was a girl, he would have been Charlotte.  J

    I'm re-invigorated!!  Thank you.

Maybe some day I'll figure out how to upload pics so you guys can see him in the adorable bagshot bamboo I bought tonight!!

  • I wanted to ditto the pp who said thanks for posting this! I had no idea how to tackle overnight CD and now I feel armed with great information. We also just got a BSRB in the mail yesterday and once I get a snappi I can give it a try. Post again with what ends up working out for you guys!
