Side lying position

Can you share your tips for perfecting a side lying latch? Just started this with DD but it seems awkward to get her on. Once she's on it seems ok though.

Re: Side lying position

  • I tried it when LO was younger but had problems like you. Then I tried it when LO was around 7 weeks and it seemed to work much better. Now that is all we do at night. I think it may have something to do with the size of the baby compared to the size of your chest when your lying down? Not sure, but you could wait a little and try it when she is older..
  • When DD was little I had trouble getting her the right height to my nipple with pillows - now we can do it without pillows. I use the hand closest to the bed to draw her head in and the other arm to draw her body in.

  • I had a lot of trouble until she was 3 or so weeks old. That is all we do at night.

  • When you are first learning, put her on her side on the bed. Then, you can position yourself so your nipple is at or near her mouth. Then, take a rolled up blanket or towel and put it behind her back to keep her in place. I take my arm and curve it around her head then then down her back to keep her in place. I learned to do it with an LC standing over me, so if you have a SO or a friend who can help you learn in the beginning, it will get easier to do it on your own. Good luck! If you can make it work, it's awesome for nighttime feedings.

  • I've tried quite a few times - it's too uncomfortable to make it worth it for us. But DD has STTN since like 4 weeks or so....if I was getting up often throughout the night still I would try anything to make it work! GL!
  • it took me a while to get the hang of it

I started when he was about 4-5 weeks old. I would half lay down and hang my boob over him and once he latches on, I slowly and awkwardly scoot into a side lying position. I can do it no problem now.
