My pedi looked at me, said without a doubt that I am Vitamin D deficient myself and that LO would be too. We are both pretty pale.
The drops smell so horrible. I gag just thinking about them but DS doesn't seem to mind.
Happy Birthday, little man. We love you so much!
My favorite money saving tip: I've earned more than $300 in gift cards (Amazon, Starbucks, Southwest!) using SwagBucks for internet searching - and you can too!
It's FREE and EASY!
They are disgusting. If you take an extra vitamin D supplement you can up the vitamin D in your milk (however it probably still isn't enough). What is enough is taking your child out in the sun for 20-30 minutes several times a week WITHOUT sunscreen (less time is needed if you live where the sun is intense, like HI or Phoenix, AZ), you need the same kind of sun exposure so it's good for you both!
I give them to dd daily (the Enfamil ones that are just Vit D, not the other vitamins). At first, she'd spit them up, but now she kind of sucks the liquid out of the dropper. She doesn't mind them anymore.
My pedi explained that he thinks the reason breastmilk doesn't contain sufficient vitamin D is because humans were meant to spend more time outside than we do now. We've become such an indoor society, so while breastmilk is nature's "perfect food," we don't live a perfect lifestyle (one in which we'd be getting enough vit D from the sun).
I think they're about $11 at Kroger (grocery store), and the box comes with a coupon for $2 of the next box. There are 50 days worth in one bottle.
We did, but I stopped using them a few weeks ago now that I make sure we get outside every day.
They smelled awful, and I'm pretty sure the iron in the poly-vi-sol that we used backed her up-- she had a very dark poop once a week or so while she was taking them. When we stopped, it went back to yellow & 1-2x a day.
I think once the weather starts getting less nice, I'll find a vitamin D drop that doesn't contain iron.
I was giving DD Target branc vitamin D drops. she took them no problem. Now that we walk every night after dinner I have been slacking on giving them to her.
I've been tested myself and my vitamin D levels are borderline. The doctor said at 2 months then we would start the vitamins at 4 months. (That appointment is Tuesday, so we'll see.)
I get my daughter out almost every day. No direct sunlight really, cause I'm not using sunscreen (she's 11 weeks), but certainly ambient sunlight. Does that count? She HATES those awful drops and I've given them to her four times total. Hearing you ladies talk about giving them to your babies makes me realize I need to give to her more (none of my other friends have had to give them to their babies).
Our doc prescribed PolyViSol to DD at her 2 week visit. I had only given them to her once because that's right around when her reflux symptoms started to show and I thought it might be a reaction to the vitamins. Turns out it wasn't so we're back giving her the vitamins now. They smell horrid and they stain (I give them to her in just a diaper and have a wipe ready to clean up whatever is spit back out). If the iron causes constipation I'll ask the doc to switch her to a vitamin D only liquid.
I thought about getting her out in the sun because we are outside every day but we live in the desert at such a high altitude that I don't feel comfortable doing that.
I do b/c I know I don't take DS out in the sun in order to get Vita D. With it being in the 90s and me taking care of DS, I know I am not getting enough either. I got a bottle of drops from GNC and they have no taste at all.
Just FYI- the PolyViSol drops are the ones that smell and supposedly taste disgusting because of the added iron. The TriViSol (which should be all that you need for Vit D) doesn't smell bad and my LO loves taking it.
Re: Vitamin D Drops
Yes - we use Trivisol.. soon will be changing to polyvisol. Vitamin D defenciancy can cause Rickets - very serious.

Everything is so exciting when you're one!
I'd do some research on this one. It seems debatable.
If my Pedi recommends it, I would like to be tested for a vitamin D deficiency and/or have LO tested. You can also get too much Vitamin D.
