Those w/toddlers then twins, sleeping arrangements

I'm not sure about what to do about cribs.  DD will be 2.5 when the boys get here.  Her crib (which she currently loves) converts to a toddler and then a full.

I don't think I want to take her crib away from her, give it to one of the boys and buy her a big girl set yet for multiple reasons...1. she loves her crib, 2. I don't have the room for another full set, and 3. from what i've seen online most of the "youth" sets are twin...i feel like i'm getting jipped out of the full.

How did you handle it?  Just buy 2 new cribs but would i have enough room in just one of the rest of the furniture (ie dressers, etc.)?  I don't have a ton of room in this house for that, we are trying to move to a 4 bedroom and I would designate 2 rooms for the boys since the cribs I plan on buying would be like DD's which would convert up to a full...even if they aren't in their own rooms for 5-6 years they will be eventually.

DH is getting on me about trying to decide on how we're going to handle this and I just get overwhelmed and shut down and change the subject.

Re: Those w/toddlers then twins, sleeping arrangements

  • is buying 2 convertible cribs, using one and storing the other an option? at least then would have the matching sets when you move into 4 bedroom house.

we decided to just get 2 more cribs....and we had room so we did 2 nurseries while we had time :-P After much talking we thought the change of to new siblings to ds life would be enough disruption without changing cribs/beds...so he will stay with what he has originally and then we just waited til BRU had a really good sale and took advantage :-) we got 20% and then signed up for CC and got another 10%. Our BRU wouldn't accept the twin discount on top of sale price, stupid!

good luck! lots of decisions to make!!

  • My DS will 2yrs 2mos. when the twins get there.  He has been in a toddler bed since he was about 18 months (i think).  The toddler bed he is in now is his crib (a 3-in-1 crib) but next weekend he will be moving into another room with a new car bed.  The twins will share a crib for a bit but we ended up buying an extra crib for cheap so that when they do separate they have their own cribs.  We have decided that when its time for the twins to be in beds we will cross that bridge when we get there.

  • DS remained in his crib. We bought IKEA Gulliver cribs for the twins - they are compact, yet sturdy & safe ($99 each for white + mattress separate). Haven't used them yet, though!
  • DD just turned 2, and the twins are due in 2 months.    DD's crib is not convertible, but we decided to keep her in it as long as she's happy and doesn't try to climb out.    We're going with smaller, inexpensive cribs from IKEA for the twin's room (we have a 3 bedroom house and they will be sharing long term)   Buying 2 of these cribs is less expensive than buying a crib that matches DD's and putting her in a bed.    We have a full size bed currently used for guests that we'll use for DD when she's ready, and buy twin beds for the twins when the time comes.
  • Griffin was 2y2mo when the twins were born - and a GREAT sleeper in his crib  - i had no plans to take him out of the crib until it became dangerous (ie- he tried to climb in or out).

We bought 2 new cribs for the twins - ikea cribs that change into toddler beds when needed... Leksvik - love them.

It wasn't until Griffin was close to 3 that he tried to climb in - so we moved him to a toddler bed then... I'm glad we waited - it was one less thing to rock his world when the twins were born by keeping him in his crib.

  • We are getting the twins their own cribs- the crib we have for DS doesn't "fit" in the twins' nursery and I want the twins to have matching cribs.  The twins' cribs will be convertible.  DS has a 3 in 1 crib but we'll keep him in the crib for as long as possible- we have a crib tent on it to prevent climbing out.  I just want DS to transition to the bed when he's a little older and "gets it" and I also worry about regression with the twins.
  • I'm putting Emerson in a big girl room in a twin bed and bought another crib that matches the one I already have for the twins.

  • DD is already using the crib converted to full size (she jumped ship at 18 mos).  If I was pregnant with a singleton I would have bought DD a new set with a twin.  I actually don't really like the full size conversion, it sits too high and I'd rather have more floor space in the room.  I ended up getting two standard cribs (at about half the price as DD's crib).  It gave me more options to set up the room, and didn't have too much molding, etc. that takes up space.

Later on, I think the twins will be split up so the boy has his own room and the girls will share.  So, I thought it was better to spend the money once those arrangements are made so they have matching furniture.

  • DD has a convertible crib (which she still sleeps in the "crib" part.)  I just bought two more convertible cribs.  The babies slept in the same room for a while...up until they were about 8 months old and then we moved them each into their own room (I have a five bedroom house so this wasn't an issue...and four of the bedrooms are upstairs....so we have three kids in their own room upstairs and our room is up there too so I can hear them at night.) They got their own rooms then because inevitably one would always wake the other up in the middle of the night or they would look at each other in the cribs and not nap/sleep, etc.  Even when they shared a room, there was still plenty of room for any other dressers or furniture.  Another thing I did was buy a big three drawer plastic bin from Wal-Mart and stick it in their closet (none of the closets are walk in....just very basic and small) to hold any extra clothes underneath the clothes that hang up.  You should have plenty of room.  Their room they shared is the smallest dimensions for a room that you can legally get as a "bedroom" in any floor plan.
  • DS will be 2 in 16 days... and no way is he ready for a  toddler bed... SOOOO he's still in his crib (which is a convertible) We ordered Graco Lauren convertibles from BRU. They were very economical and are well put together. We're only putting 1 together until we need the second, but we'll have them.
  • My DD turned 2, 12 days before the babies were born.  She was still sleeping well in her crib.  I purchased another crib knowing that I might have to buy another.  I planned on letting my girls cosleep and was just going to play it by ear whether they needed seperated before DD was out of her crib or not.  She ended up moving into a twin bed when the girls were between 3 and 4 months old and they coslept for almost 8 months.  So I only had to buy 1 extra crib instead of 2.  I figured though that if I needed another crib I could have one purchased and put up in a matter of hours so I was comfortable taking a wait and see approach.
