I am taking part in a genetic study through USC that is trying to find any genes and/or risk factors associated with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG, severe nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, usually requiring IV fluids/nutrition). I have been quite sick for both of my pregnancies, and I want to try to help figure out why this happens so that by the time my J wants to be a mommy, she won't have to go through this.  (My grandmother, my mother, and I have all had HG.)

Here's where I need your help:  If you yourself had hyperemesis or (and this is the even more important part) if you have had 2 pregnancies WITHOUT HG (normal pregnancy nausea &/or some vomiting without major weight loss is ok), contact the email address on the linked website, and Dr. Fejzo will email you and ask a few questions to ensure you are eligible for the study.  If you qualify to participate in the study as someone with HG or as a "friend control" non-HG mother, she will contact you via telephone for around 5 minutes to go over some CA state law mandated forms about the study, and then you return a signed waiver that says you want to be in the study.  She will then send you a vial to spit into to send back to them, and that's it, you're done.

I would really appreciate it if you could take the short amount of time to participate.  As of late, they are VERY short on "friend controls" so I thought this board could be a good source of participants.  If you know of any other moms who qualify for the study, please pass this info on.  They can be from anywhere in the country, too.

I'll send the email. Thanks to you, too--I hope one day there can be more understanding on why it occurs, so we can actually help HG moms get more help. My grandma had it, my mom did not, so I hope it skips my daughters, too. I vomited frequently through my first year postpartum after having my third, after having 3 HG pregnancies so close together. I can't stand the thought of one of my girls experiencing this.

Dr. Fejzo is going to do a side-study at some point about women and their family members who have had HG, but for right now, I think she said they only want one member per family to participate. (Just FYI )
