Gestational Diabetes?32 Weeks

I was diagnosed late with the GD and have been working on my diet now for a week.  I?m starving all the time and now losing weight?  How do you handle this?  Any ideas on how I can keep my weight up and not make my blood sugar rise?  I feel like I?m starving my boys and the doctors don?t care.  They say its normal to lose weight and it doesn?t hurt the babies?how can that be true?when all the books I read say I should be gaining 2-3 lbs a week right now?to fatten them up for birth.  I don?t want unhealthy babies, but I do want nice strong fat babies?vent over?

Re: Gestational Diabetes?32 Weeks

  • Have you met with a dietitian? If not, then I would do so ASAP. Do you know how many calories a day you should be eating for the pregnancy?

I was diagnosed at 28 weeks and tried unsuccessfully to control it with diet for one week. I then asked to go directly to insulin. I kept track of everything I ate on a spreadsheet and made sure I ate 2700 calories a day. From week 28 until almost week 37, I gained 2lbs. I was incredibly nervous about the babies' growth. On the diet, I tried to eat the higher calorie foods.....a lot of cheese, peanut butter, nuts, 2% milk. You really should not be hungry on the diet. The key is to eat every 3 hours and get as many calories in while still adhering to the grams of carbs and proteins. It gets a lot easier after a while. Let me know if you have any questions. Oh....despite my little weight gain towards the end, my girls weighed 6ln1oz and 5lb8oz at birth.

  • Meeting with a dietician will help.  I was starving my first week as well trying to follow the diet  Keep eating more of the stuff you are allowed to eat and eat more often.  You can still have lots of food, just stuff that is not high in sugar or carbs (all the good stuff).  I found the glucerna bars and shakes helped in between meals.

I didn't gain any weight for about 4 weeks because of it, but the babies were gaining weight just fine.  They get what they need.

  • I just met with my dietician for the first time this morning and I think it will really help. I have the opposite problem though. I can't eat enough. I get too full too fast and am not getting in enough calories. For the last week, I was going off of guidelines that I found online for a singleton pregnancy and it wasn't enough carbs and I could only get in an average of 1900 calories a day. I was surprised that my carb allowances are actually a lot higher than I thought they would be.  Here is the breakdown that I got, but we'll see how it goes now that I can start monitoring glucose.

Breakfast 30 carbs, snack 30 carbs, lunch 75 carbs (this is when I can handle the most food, so she loaded me up here), snack 30 carbs, dinner 60 carbs and snack 30 carbs. Total of 2200 calories.

Even after lunch though and hitting all my carbs, I'm still just at 833 calores for the day. I got a computer program called FitDay that you can enter in all your foods and it tells you all the nutrients so it's easy to see exactly what you are getting. It also has a lot of other great features, like weight tracker, activity tracker and all sorts of reports and such. It's a great tool!

     Good luck!
