Breastfeeding

Ugh! Thrush!!

My two month old and I are being treated for thrush.  I am on medication, and I apply nystatin to myself after each feeding and she gets treated also.  She has also had the purple treatment put in her mouth.  We still have symptoms and it has been almost three weeks!

I talked to my OBGYN yesterday and she basically told me that Im doing the only things I can do and that I should consider not breastfeeding.  I do not want to stop breastfeeding!  What do you guys think, has anyone else had similar problems?

Re: Ugh! Thrush!!

  • Wow. You don't have to stop breastfeeding because of thrush. We had it for several weeks too (maybe a month and a half?). It is hard to get over, but you can do it. My midwife was very helpful, but my lactation consultant was also helpful.

I was on the oral yeast medication for 2 weeks (Fluconazole), but my DS's pedi wouldn't treat DS, and both of us needed to be treated. So of course we were reinfected. Then I took the oral medication for 1 week, and I treated DS and my nipples with the purple stuff (gentian violet). That finally seemed to work. Work with your doctor, your pedi, your lc, or whomever seems to be the most helpful when it comes to supporting you breastfeeding in working out a treatment plan.

Give your healthcare provider this information. It is from the Newman Breastfeeding Clinic and has a protocol on how to treat thrush properly: https://www.nbci.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=12:candida-protocol&catid=5:information&Itemid=17

In the meantime, this is how you can try to prevent the yeast from reoccuring:

    - throw away all reusable breast pads and only used the disposable type for now

    - use a vinegar wash (half water, half white vinegar) on your nipples after every feeding. I would mix it in a cup and then use a cotton ball to put on my nipples. Allow to air dry.

    - If you use cloth diapers, wash in the hottest water and then do a vinegar wash on these, too, until the yeast infection is gone. You might consider using disposables until the yeast is gone.

    - If you've used a pump, bottles, nipples, etc., steralize all of these, and I also did a vinegar wash on these after boiling for 20 minutes every time I used them.

    - Wash all of your towels, burp rags, bibs etc. in hot water and do a vinegar rinse on these.

    - Take a probiotic. You can get these at a health food store and it will help fight the yeast.

    - Eat very little sugar, including dairy. Yeast thrives on sugars. Obviously, your LO is just eating dairy, but you can limit your intake.

I know thrush is unimaginably painful, and very difficult to get rid of, but you do not have to stop breastfeeding. You can get through it. I'm sorry you are experiencing this right now!

  • Also, don't forget to wash your bras/nursing tanks in the hot water/vinegar rinse also.

  • I was just about to post and ask if anyone has had sucess in treating this. It's been almost a week of Nystatin and my LO hasnt shown much improvement. I just got an RX for diflucan for myself but I feel like we are just reinfecting each other.

  • nystatin didn't do anything for DS, his is finally clearing up after his pedi put him on diflucan.  we also did 3 rounds of the purple stuff (that even seemed to work better than the nystatin.

  • I *think* I also had thrush, but it can be impossible to diagnose unless the baby really has symptoms. For me, it was red nipples that were excruciatingly painful and felt like they were burning. DD had no symptoms. I found out after treating thrush for two weeks with little to no relief that blanched nipples are often mistakenly diagnosed as thrush

Look up blanched nipples on Kellymom and see if that makes sense to you. You may have been misdiagnosed if your treatments for thrush aren't working.
