Using regular silverware?
LO is 11+ months and I have been letting him eat pieces of food with a metal dessert fork. I stab the food for him and then he fusses if I try to feed him so I set the fork down and he picks it up and feeds himself. He hasn't had any trouble and eats more than he does when he uses his fingers.
My FIL made a comment about being worried about LO stabbing himself in the eye. Am I screwing up by letting him use regular silverware?

If you're monitoring him, then I don't see the problem. Its a good lesson to learn!
My sister has some toddler silverware (actually silver, looks like her "real" set) for my niece. The ends are a bit more rounded and the handles are shorter but they are shiny just like the rest, so my niece doesn't even notice the difference.
