If your DC is on Pulmicort, do you have these probs?

My DS has been on Pulmicort once daily for the past 3-4 months, but increased to twice daily for the last 3 weeks or so.  Also, during the last couple weeks, he has developed two issues and I'm wondering if they are due to the Pulmicort, another issue, or just random child strangeness.  The issues are:

1.  He is having pee leaks in his underwear.  He's been fully potty trained for well over a year and did not have any recent issues prior to this.  He doesn't even notice the leaks and when we point them out, he says he didn't even feel the pee coming.  I do not feel like he's lying.  He seems genuinely confused and frustrated about it.

2.  His sense of smell and aversion to various smells has increased exponentially.  He can't stand the smell of my freshly brushed teeth in the morning - says the toothpaste smell makes him sick.  He is noticing all kinds of other smells and seeming to be averse to them as well.  Never had this issue before.

What do you think?  Has your DC experienced any of this?

  • Hmmm.... interesting!  DS started on Pulmicort about a month ago.  he has been potty trained for almost 3 months, has NEVER had an accident until this past week and it was almost the same thing... he just started to go and said that he didn't feel it coming.  He still wears pullups at night and they have been wet more often then not as well.  I actually wondered if it had anything to do with the meds, but didn't think enough of it to check into it!

I haven't noticed anything with the smells, but my DS is very sensitive to smells/foods/textures to begin with so I probably would not attribute anything like this (with my DS) to the meds.

I would call the pedi and ask though. Never hurts!  Maybe they can switch him to something else that has less side effects (or see if switching makes a difference for the bladder and smell issues!).

     Good luck!

My twins have been on pulmicort since they were 10 mo old.  Thankfully, they haven't experience any side effects that I can see/tell.
