Babies: 0 - 3 Months

diaper usage question

Hello all new moms! Jumping over from July moms to be with a quick question.

DH and I are trying to figure out how many of each size diaper we will need to start off with. Im sure we have more than enough newborn size, LO weighs almost 5 lbs already so I can't imagine her being in them too long. But as far as size 1 and 2 we have around 300-350 of each size.

Do you think this is enough to get started?

TIA! Smile

Re: diaper usage question

  • It's really hard to say.  My baby was 7lbs 8oz when he was born and we just moved him up to size 1 diapers.  We only had one pack of newborn diapers before he was born because we didn't think he would be in them long.  We had to buy more when he got here.  Also, you don't really know what brand will work best for you.  Everyone has a different experience with their little ones.  Sorry, wish I could give you a more definite answer, but good luck with your little one.

  • I think you have enough. I wouldn't buy anymore because you may get some as gifts from people too. Our dd was 5#15oz at birth and she was in NB size for about 7-8 weeks but then seemed to grow out of the size 1 diapers faster and she's now in size 2 and about 12.5#. Good luck!

  • It's hard to say for sure. Buy some of every size, since they'll use them all eventually, but dont buy too much. It's better to wait until you see where your baby is at when you are near the end of a pack. We have a TON of extra size 1's cause we bought WAY too many and DD grew to a size 2 faster than the weight on the box said.

I think you have a good starter stash.  We ended up having to buy more NB's (DS was 8.2) and then giving a bunch of them away because even though they fit, DS peed through them all of the time.  I wouldn't get a bunch more until you figure out if you even like the ones you have.

  • I agree with PP that you may not know what brand works best for you.  From my shower, I had 3 packages (approx 40 diapers) of newborn diapers, each a different brand.  That was plenty to get me started and once I figured out what brand worked best for us (Pampers). I think I ended up buying one more mega box (about 200 diapers).  I've gone through 2 mega boxes of size 1 (216 diapers each) and now have about 30-40 of those left and DD is about ready to fit into size 2.  So after this weekend she'll move up.

  • I wouldn't buy too many now unless you're willing to go and exchange them if the brand doesn't fit your LO.  Huggies don't fit DD too well but Pampers are great for us.

DD is almost 8 pounds but I think she'll be in NB for a bit longer because her legs are so damn skinny.

  • It's definitely enough to get started, IMO. You can always run out to get some more if you need. Also, you might find that the brand of diapers you bought don't work for you and you may need to try another brand.

They told us DD was 6 lbs 12 oz at 37 weeks. My DD was born four weeks later and weighed 6 lbs 14 oz. Obviously, the weight estimate was quite off. DD is still in NB diapers now, and we had only one package of 80 when she came home.  So far, we have gone through almost 4 packages of NB diapers and will probably buy at least one more before she grows out of them.

BTW, love your name choice ;) Our choice was partly in honor of Harper Lee.

  • We have a harper too. We picked it because we didn't think it was that popular... Watch, it'll be the next Emily.

  • I have had several people tell me that Harper is going to be the next popular name! At least we got ours in early before it got too trendy!

Thanks for all the help ladies and GL with your LOs!!! I cant wait to meet mine!
