Babies: 3 - 6 Months

weight loss and milk supply

so im one of those mommies who is afraid of a drop in milk supply.  I probably have a good 15 to 20 (maybe 25 lbs) to lose also. This isnt weight i put on while pg but before. so my work is having a biggest loser competition and i really want to compete but i dont want to affect my milk supply.

anyone have any exp. with this? any suggestions?

previous my lc has advised to keep clear of strenuous activity bc she feels it would decrease my supply.

so whats the limit? how much is too much?

eta: is it affect? or effect??? i hate those two.

Re: weight loss and milk supply

  • I think after around 3 months your supply isn't as fickle anymore.  As long as you go slow and steady you should be okay.  If you start having problems you can just quit right?  Good luck!

  • I'm like you.  I lost all the pregnancy weight but would like to lose another 30.  I'm walking a lot, and its helping, but I'm also eating a lot.  I am so stinkin' hungry all. the. time.  I'm kind of making peace with not losing the weight until DD is weaned...

BUT... just so you know, there's a great resource out there.  (I'm on a mac, so I can't make a linky.)  https://babyfit.sparkpeople.com will allow you to log food and count calories with your breastfeeding factored in.  I get like 2700 calories a day!  It may be a worth a shot.

    HTH!

meeee tooo!! hungry all the time.

  • When my work did biggest losers, some of the people were doing insane things to pump up their loss and it just wasn't healthy.  (5-6 pounds each week is in no way healthy.)  I wouldn't do the biggest losers (especially if there is a buy-in) because I don't think it's good to lose weight quickly while nursing.

That said, I am doing WW.  My supply isn't abundant (he gets a formula bottle every day or two) but it wasn't abundant before I started WW.  I've started bumping up the oatmeal (good low point WW breakfast too) and it's increasing my supply.

  • I am also doing WW, I've lost 18lbs and no problem with supply. I even think my supply got better when I started eating better and drinking more water.

I'm glad it's not just me!  I feel like I eat more now than when I was pg.
