Babies: 3 - 6 Months

when do babies start to need water

I forgot to ask the Dr. at DD appointment, but I was wondering if anyone had any info on when to start giving babies small amounts of water.  DD does have solids one to two times per day, and with the heat, I am just wondering if I should be giving her a few sips of water here and there.  One of my baby books mentioned it, but I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas.

Thanks!

Water can throw off the electrolyte balance in babies leading to water intoxication, which can be deadly. Breastmilk provides all the hydration they need (as does formula, generally). It's definitely something to talk to your ped about before starting.

  • We asked and our Pedi said she dosen't need it but she could have some if she was outside for awhile.

  • The pedi just told us we can start giving him a little bit of water.  Especially during the hot summer months.
  • Yep, I know about the dangerous of water at too young of age, I was just wondering if there was a certain age where it becomes necessary.
  • Our pedi said to let the baby take occasional sips from our water bottles.  We live in FL, and it's already in the mid 90's outside.   July-August are going to be miserable.
