Moisturizers for Eczema ?

If you use a non-prescription moisturizer on LO's Eczema, which ones have you found to help? Has any one tried the Aveeno Baby Cream (I saw on the label that it could be used for dry skin from eczema but the Aveeno baby lotion did not make the same statement)? My mom uses the Aveeno brand on the dry skin from psoriasis and it helps tremendously for her so I know that would be a good brand to try but am curious as to what others are using.

Currently, we are to use cortisone cream on any red irritated spots up to 3x daily. After night time baths, I oil her up with baby oil, rub it in then smother her in Aquaphor to keep the moisture in. Then just Aquaphor in the mornings and early afternoons to help keep moisture in. THis has taken care of about 95% of the red irritated spots (just a few small persistent spots in creases and one on her back) but her skin still has a rough feel to it.

A call to the pediatrician said the next step is to start adding a moisturizer before the morning and afternoon Aquaphor but that it is up to me which one to try first though he highly recommends using a fragrance and dye free moisturizer intended for babies.

I have eczema so I know this from experience. Eucerin CREAM has worked wonders for me. It comes in a jar.

  • our derm recommends hydrated petrolatum, you don't need prescription for it but you have to ask the pharmacy for it

    it's fragrance free and hypoallergenic

It seems to work better than Aquaphor for us and less greasy.

  • I'm testing the Mustela Stelatopia lotion for eczema on DS's arms and Udder Cream on his legs.  So far I'm pretty happy with the Mustela.  We've just started trying the Udder Cream.
  • Spectro Ezcema Kids Cream
  • We just switched our LO to all Cetaphil. I use the soap/cleanser and the lotion and it has helped so much!! It was all over my LO's tummy and now it is just in a small spot but is going away. No more johnson and johnson any kind of anything. We also use dreft.
  • I bought the Aveeno Baby lotion that has excema in description label. I also use aquafer in the mornings or evenings and use the aveeno for the other time. I don't like how the aquafer feels on my skin & while it doesn't seem to bother DS, when he's cranky and crying the aveeno is easier to spread!

We did the same things that you did but added Cetaphil as well. It's really helped.

I'm lurking, but thought I'd chime in. My mom has eczema and psoriasis(sp?) on 97% of her body. It's been serious since she was 12. She uses Cetaphil, and it's pretty much the only thing that works. Aquafor is REALLY greasy. It gets on everything. Also, I know this is hard to do with babies, but only bathe when you have to. Every day isn't recommended, and make the water as cool as your LO will take it. Hotter water irritates it pretty bad. When LO gets older, talk to your pedi about giving them fish oil. Mom started taking fish oil pills(they make a liquid) about 6 months ago, and you could see a change within a month or so.

I just wanted to say that the opposite was recommended...we were told to bathe LO MORE frequently.  I was really surprised when the Ped told us this, so I looked it up when we got home, and sure enough, research shows that babies with eczema should be bathed more frequently!  Who knew?!

We did get an okay for bathing every day also but were told to cut back to 10 minutes or less. LO's baths were up towards 30 minutes because she loves the water so much and I would just take my dinner plate into the bathroom with us. She would happily splash away while I ate a peaceful meal...
