Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Paci ? from 0-3

My son is FF and has been offered his paci (MAM) since day 2.  If it is in his mouth he will happily suck on it and it soothes him, however he is unable to keep it in his mouth for more then a couple of minutes.  Then when it falls out he gets upset unless he is already asleep.  He never sleeps with his paci in his mouth, though.

My question is if any of you had babies who initially did not keep a paci in on their own, did they learn how to do it later on?  He occasionally finds his thumb and sucks on that and I would much rather his paci than his thumb!

He is 8 weeks today and I am wondering if he is just still too young to know how to keep it in his mouth, if I should try a new brand, or if he is just not going to be into a pacifier?

Why would you rather a paci than his thumb? I kind of feel the opposite. Mine does use a paci though.

Yeah you may wanna try a different brand/type... couldn't hurt! The soothie pasi's do not have any curve to then so they pop out really easily. Mine uses a wubbanub so he has been able to get it back it pretty easily for a while now. Plus he loves the plush end for grabbing on to.

  • I would rather the paci than the thumb because I can take the paci away before it causes any dental issues.  I have had a few family members who are thumb suckers and ended up with serious orthodontic issues as pre-teens.

  • We also have the MAM pacis.  He may just still be too young, my little guy used to spit it out too.  Now he holds his fists behind it to hold it in.  Our LO doesn't go to bed with it either, but if he is awake and sucking on it, when it falls out he tries to reach for it with his mouth (it is really cute to see his concetration).  I would just give it time.

DS didn't really take to the paci until he was about 3 months.  Now he loves it.  We use the MAM ones and NUK and the Expressions ones.  Sometimes he prefers one kind over another.

  • DS can keep the paci in his mouth pretty well now, but he did have trouble in the beginning. We don't have any MAM, we have NUK Orthodontic. He still can't keep the Soothie (that we got in the hospital) in his mouth.

  • DS used to spit his out all the time and cry and I would have to put it back in. He would sleep with it in and he would wake himself up if it came out, which meant me getting up every 5 seconds to put it back in his mouth. Be glad your LO doesn't sleep with it. We use the avent ones. DS eventually learned how to keep it in his mouth. Just give it time. Now he doesn't even use it as much, just when he's soothing himself to sleep or in the car when he can't suck on his hands. Oh, and about the thumb...you can't really stop that from happening. Once he starts to teeth, it will be permanently in his mouth.
