I think the risk of suffocation with the bumper is still there. We just bought the breatheable bumpers. I really like them and they offer some cushiness to the rails...and keeps his arms inside. Let's put it this way - the breatheable bumpers make it more comfortable to him than nothing.
The breathable bumpers are a good option for you. I have had DD's regular bumpers that came with her bedding set in her crib from day one and she has slept in her crib from day one- she is all over the place now, if there were no bumpers she would have bruises all over! I have never worried about suffocation with the bumpers- once they have the control to move their head and neck they can turn their head away from the bumper.
Our Journey from two to three!
3 IUI's, 2 IVF's, decided to move to foster/adopt.
12/24/2009 Baby C born, 2/1/2010 placed with us,
5/17/2011 Adoption final- we are finally a forever family!
We were in the same boat. My DS would wiggle around, and once I caught him with his legs up to his knees through the rails trying to flip over. Then he starting creeping all over the crib and hitting his head on the rails - hard. My friend has a breathable bumper and there is no way that would be enough cushioning to protect his head. We've had them on for a bit now and he hasn't had a problem.
If it makes you feel better, try putting up some of them, where he tends to hit the crib. We did that. At first it was just the sides, and now we had to add one end panel. At least with ours there is still a gap between the panels where air gets through.
OMG DH and I took off and put back on our crib bumpers so many times, I couldn't even tell ya. They are ON now and that's that. DD has great head control and I have seen her move her head away from the bumper in her sleep so, although the worry isn't completely gone, it isn't as huge.
