What would you do? Job related

Would you take a pay cut & accept a new job if:
(a) it was 30 mins closer to home - which means 1 extra hour a day with DD
(b) it's a lateral career-move: from Manager to Manager
(c) you don't like your current company and want to move on
(d) you're due a raise at current job in July
(e) pay cut is approx 10% less than current salary

I'm undecided. No offer yet, but I'm kind of expecting one and am not sure what I would say...

Re: What would you do? Job related

  • For me yes. If it is essentially the same position but means more time with my daughter, hands down yes. You can cut back in your budget somewhere easy to make up for theat 10%

  • This would all depend on a few more things for me:

    1) Benefits

    2) How will our financials take the pay cut

    3) How is the company standing? When they lay off they lay off from the bottom. I would rather stay with a company I was secure with if I wasn't too sure about the other company. This economy is tricky.

    4) will you save money with the extra hour? Like not having to pay for daycare.

  • From what you described yes I would accept the new job.  If I didn't like my current job then a 10% cut would be worth it to me to be happy somewhere else.  And a little extra time with your daughter is an added bonus.

    1) Benefits - better at the new job

    2) How will our financials take the pay cut - we can make due, but things are already tight

    3) How is the company standing? When they lay off they lay off from the bottom. I would rather stay with a company I was secure with if I wasn't too sure about the other company. This economy is tricky.

Current company is trying to get rid of people who make more $ and hire new college grads for half the salary - so I don't feel 'safer' here! (horrible I know!)

    4) will you save money with the extra hour? Like not having to pay for daycare. Nope, daycare is per day - regardless of # of hours

    Thanks for the replies!

  • I would say yes too.
  • Don't forget to factor in the cost of gas.  That could make up some of your 10%.

  • I would, think of what you will be saving in gas being 30 minutes closer, yes its a cut, but just because you are scheduled for a pay raise it may not come, july is still a month away.
  • I would.  The only downside of this job is a little less money.  BUt you would be happier and you'd be able to spend more time with LO.
