Baby "gasping" for breath while feeding

Hi All,

The past few days it sounds like my LO is gasping for breath while BF.  They have just started to burp in between breasts too.

I am wondering if there is a better position (we do cross cradle) to help him breathe better while feeding...or is this even a big deal? Does baby know to stop to take a breath?

Thanks!

  • From what I've read, that's just the normal way that newborns breathe. Just angle him so that you can see an open nostril and you should be fine.

  • It's normal. My 3 mo still occasionally gasps while taking a big drink. Just burp betweem sides and after and it'll be fine.

  • He would definitely stop if he couldn't breathe, don't worry.  DS had breathing problems when he was a newborn and would pull away and rest for a while.  He would choose breathing over eating.  But it's totally normal and everyone said.  He will get used to the milk flow and be able to handle it.
  • Like others said, it's definitely normal.  On the off chance that it's a partially blocked nostril thing, I would just keep a hand on your breast near his nose and pull it out of the way to see if it helps.  Mine are pretty big, and I regularly still have to do this for DS to make sure his nose breathing is unimpeded as he feeds.

This!  I have to hold my breast in the cradle hold.  Even though he's a big boy, we use the football hold at home.
