NBR: Microsuede or leather for family room sofa??

Buying a new couch for our family room.  We have a 4 month old and two doggies.  Would you go with slick leather (not suede) or microsuede?  My key concerns are comfort and stain resistance.  I worry that the leather will be hot in summer and cold in winter, but I think it looks a bit nicer than the microsuede.  But microsuede is soft and might be more comfy.  Thoughts

  • Leather for sure.

So much easier to keep clean. Just keep a comfy blanket for winter time and to sit on in the summer, etc.

  • Are your dogs allowed on furniture? If they are, I would go with the microsuede. The shiny leather will show every little scratch.

On the other hand, the leather would be super easy to clean...

We have microsuede, and a cat. I use that pledge pet hair grabber thingy on the couch, and it seems to work. But anything (food-wise) that has been dropped on it that we might have missed and didn't clean right away is in there pretty good...seemingly forever.

  • I LOVE my microsuede couch.  My cousin had a beautiful and expensive leather couch and her kids ended up marking it up with toys.  My couch looks brand new every time we clean it and I have had it for 5 years.  Get it scotch gaurded before they deliver it.

    Leather.

We have microsuade and I wish we didn't.  Every single bit of moisture shows up and leaves evap outline.  Dirt sticks to it really bad too.

My SIL has leather and she doesn't have any of those issues.  Plus, it doesn't get all hot and sticky in the summer or cold in winter.  Just make sure you get 100% leather and not some combination leather...that stuff sucks.

  • microsuede!  our dogs destroyed our leather couch in less than two years and it was a pain to try to get clean.  Plus the pet hair just flew right off of it and either down in the cracks or off onto the floor, at least with the new microsuede one I bought the pet hair sticks to it making it easier to clean the hair up.  I just run over it with the vacuum or pet hair remover every few days.     And follow the above advice and get it scotch gaurded, worth every penny!
  • My leather couches are 9 years old, and they still look fabulous!  I have 9 (yes, NINE) cats and 2 dogs, and NOW we have the baby.  The cats sleep on it, the dogs sleep on it, the baby spits up on it.  They are color worn, they were a deep red color, but now are faded to a bit of burnt orange color in the "heavy traffic" spots (meaning the most popular sitting spots).  I think it looks really cool, they are awesome, and I will NEVER buy any other material couch.

Leather.  I have both and cannot wait to get rid of the microsuede.

  • Our living room set is microfiber/microsuede. We love it! We have a sofa, loveseat, chair and a half (a 2 person chair, basically) and an ottoman. It cleans up SO well! Ryan has pretty much peed or spit up on all of it at some point and you definitely can't tell. And it is so so comfy.

  • we got the microsuede with stain protection and a 5 year warranty for stains and rips/tears    i love our couch!-sectional actually
  • Microsuede - we have a brown loveseat in the family room and a light teal in the living room - the brown shows dog hair bad!  But both are easy to clean!
