Sunscreen question- no flames please

I feel ridiculous typing this, but I just have to ask...is sunscreen necessary for LO when they are in a completely shaded area?  I ask because I set up Jake's baby pool today so we can go in tomorrow and it's in a completely shaded area.  Should I still put sunblock on him?

Re: Sunscreen question- no flames please

  • If it's complete shade I wouldn't, but even if it's dappled sun coming through the trees I would.  As long as he can't get up and run into the sun you should be okay.  ;)

  • I would put sunblock on him yes but not sunscreen. The light can reflect off the water getting him a nice burn even in the shade.
  • I always put sunscreen on DS, when he is going outside. He is a pasty little boy and will burn easily like his mom and I would like to spare him that pain.

  • I think that if it is really a legitimately shaded area, it is not necessary.  However, as an Irish chick, I can tell you that there are lots of areas that appear totally shaded and somehow you still get sunburned....so I always (well almost always) try to err on the side of caution.

Plus, I think it is safer to put it on him (inside before you go out) so that you don't have to stress if you want to call an audible after you get out there and hang out in a less shaded area for a bit after he is in the pool...just a thought.

    Have fun!

  • I would Just to be safe.  You never know how light will reflect and I have gotten pink sitting in the shade before.

  • I'm trying to get in the habit of always applying sunblock (not sunscreen - physical blocks are better).  That way I don't have to worry about shaded or not.  Besides I figure if I can get that into our respective routine now it won't be a battle later on.

  • grass doen't tend to reflect much lite up, but if you're on sand, water (or snow) best protect from the rays that will bounce up at him.

  • I would, i can burn in the dark, I swear, so i am extra cautious with E

and FWIW, there is a difference between sunscreen and sunblock and babies should have block! :)   (one made for babies, of course!)
