What's an appropriate time to wait for a contractor?

We are having our patio extended. We found a guy to do the work and he called yesterday and said he would be here today around 12:30. It's going on 4:30 and nothing. I'm starting to get irate at this guy.

I'm ready to move onto another guy, but DH wants to give him another chance. I want to have the patio done for the long weekend. We also, can't get the fence installed until the patio is poured.

  • Call him back and find out wtf.  Depending on his answer/excuse, dump him and go to the next one.

  • I swear this is how they all are!

People were supposed to be here yesterday AM - heard nothing and no show.  Guy just called and said they will be her in 45 minutes...and it has been close to an hour

  • I would give them a 1/2 hr from my appt time & then call them.  I work in this kind of field & hate my boss for doing this kind of crap.  I had one of the workers call me this a.m. on one of his jobs saying the customers wasn't there I called the customer & my boss never made an appt with the guy just thought it was o.k. to show up WTF it's a good 45 min drive each way for or guy to be on the clock with no work scheduled.  I called the customer & he could be there in a 1/2 hr but still were paying this guy for AGAIN our mistake.  Hate it.  If you cannot make you appt you need to call the customer within a reasonable time to make a new appt. we do this all the time too. Our company is doing really bad & don't know how long the doors will be open and a lot of it is because of this kind of crap.  Sorry been a bad day here.

  • That's totally unacceptable.  DH is a contractor, and he usually gives his first appt of the day a set time, then  an hour window for later appointments. I'd call him, find out the reason, then go from there.  if he says an hour, and still doesn't make it in that hour, call him back on the dot and tell him to move on.  I like to reiterate that my time is just as valuable and I can't afford to be sitting around on someone.

  • That's absolutely unacceptable. In this economy, that guy should be jumping for work (I run the office at my dad's masonry business...its miserable right now). He shouldn't be blowing you off. I'd hate to see the quality of work he does if he can't even be bothered to show up.
