That's too cute!! My DD has just recently started crying when she doesn't "get her way." I think it's so cool that they started to realize that they can control their environment.
I usually try to engage him by doing something else.. having him stand on my lap facing me (facing away from the tv), or doing some tummy time facing away from it...
I'm not gonna lie though, when I've needed to get something accomplished that's important I have put him in front of baby einsteins for about 15 minutes or so. He'll watch for a bit but usually he gives me a cue that he's done with it. As long as it gives me a second to concentrate on paying the bills or what-have-you, and I'm not sitting him in front of it all day I don't feel like I'm doing something terrible.
I don't think a few minutes really does any damage. I haven't been home all that much this past week (my Dad had a heart attack) and DH will watch tv with him (even though I ask him not to).
I own the 26 disc baby einstein but I haven't used it yet. He loves his play mat and that gives me time to do a few other things (like eat). But if he notices the tv that's all he wants to look at and you can't get him to look away.

DS watches the Laker games with DH. He gets mad when it goes to commercial. When I'm home I try to only do music and watch t.v. during his naps. Then we try to catch up on TVO'd stuff whend DS goes down.
We have had the same issue. Made me feel like a bad parent for a minute....Now I'm super sensitive to making sure we read, sing and talk to her enough--and turn off the TV! LOL

Sorry to hear about your dad.
