clogged ducts ... that won't go away

DS is 1 week today. On Friday my milk came in and I immediately had a clogged duct (due to a too tight nursing tank). I've gotten larger tanks and bras; however, I have developed clogged ducts in each breast on the outer part, near my armpit.

I've been using heat before feeding and ensuring that baby is eating until fulfilled. Should I try to pump afterwards for a few minutes to ensure my breast is being emptied? I'm not sure what else to do and I really want to make sure I remedy this before it becomes mastitis.

BTW - DS feeds about every 2.5 hours (I often have to wake him to feed, even during the day).

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Someone suggested on here a while back to pump on all fours.  And at first I laughed and thought yeah right.  But after I got my first clogged duct, it hurt so bad and hot compresses did nothing for me.  So I gave it a try and it actually does work.  So that is my suggestion to you.  Pump on all fours.  I'm an EPer so I have no clue how to get LO to get the clogged duct unclogged.

  • Yes, you need to empty them. Either pump or hand express, and massage the area. Put a warm wet compress on them (baby diapers work GREAT for this...just fill one up with warm water!) and massage, then nurse, then pump if it's still there.

  • Mysister is an lc.. she suggested going to the store and buying cabbage.  Boil the outer leaves then let them cool to the point where you wont burn urself and plaace them on ur breasts... sit like this til they cool then pump.  She said it should work gl

  • I get them every couple of weeks on my left side.  Sucks because it causes a serious supply drop before I catch it and can fix it.  But it works quickly for me to put the breast in really hot water (I use a big mixing bowl), then hand express everything I can.  I pump after every feeding when it happens so that I can keep my supply up, because my LO does not suck off it well at all when it happens.  Hand massage all you can too!
  • Moist heat, hard massage, and frequent nursing/pumping should eventually do the trick. It might take a little while. I've had clogs that have lasted 2 days before. Very frustrating :-(

You may also want to switch up the nursing positions (football, to cradle, etc.). All fours never worked for me, but some women swear by it. It's worth trying!

The last clog I had was dislodged by the pump on the highest suction setting. I kept massaging while pumping.
