anyone have a shy nipple?

In my breastfeeding class they told us to squeeze around the areola and if the nipple goes in at all it's called a shy nipple. Of course I have two of them! I'm assuming this will make BFing more difficult. Anyone have experience with this?

Re: anyone have a shy nipple?

  • It could make it more difficult but not necessarily so. You might just need to use a nipple guard when you first start breastfeeding to help the nipple come out

  • Pumping for a short time before nursing will also draw the nipple out.

  • Technically it shouldn't be a problem because LO should latch on to more than just the nipple.  But like others have said, you could try pumping a little to draw it out.  I have one like that and DD did fine latching on right away without the help of pumping or shields.  I have been nursing for 7 months and it is no longer a shy nipple - guess DD has good suction!
