Special Needs

Can I ask for some advice?

TIA, since this might be a little long of a post, and its kind of all over the place.

DD had her NICU follow-up appt. on Friday with the Developmental Psychologist.  She felt she scored btwn 17-20 months overall, which is great since she's getting PT & ST.  She did however, strongly recommend getting an OT eval for sensory issues--noone has mentioned this before. She said its common in Preemies b/c their nervous system is still a lil off since they grew up in an incubator.  I discussed the possibility of OT with her EI Coordinator last Tuesday, and we felt there wasn't enough to go on to warrant an Eval. (and it was for a few fine motor things, not even for sensory). Today, she had her follow-up with the Pysiatrist, and she gave her a few fine motor tasks to do, and she did them well. She said in her opinion "she doesn't believe in sensory issues and they are mainly terms for Autistic kids."  Her words.  I don't really agree with this.  Anyone can have any type of sensory issue.  I have to call her EI Coordinator back tomm. morning to let her know how the appt. went today, but now I'm worried that she won't get the OT eval.  Maybe it is to early, but what if she could benefit from it now?  I feel so torn listening to these doctors all the time. SIGH. One specialist sees something, that another one doesn't and its so fustrating. We don't see the Pysiatrist again until Sept. since she decided she didn't need any type of shoe inserts or braces, and we see the Developmental Pedi. again in July.  She said both her & the Developmental Pedi. will follow her until she's 3 since they want to watch her for ADD, which she said is common in Preemies, but also b/c in both her 6 month progress notes it says DD has a problem with attention to task.  So, I guess my question is, should I push for the OT eval now, or wait just in case they don't find anything and then it will be harder down the road to get another eval.?  Also, based on all of this, it seems like she won't qualify for that school that I was so excited about.  BUT the psysiatrist said that's why they are following her until she's 3 in case they do notice a learning disability later on, they can get her into Special Education classes.  I hate this wait and see.

Re: Can I ask for some advice?

  • Thanks, and I'm sorry my post was confusing.  But you guys answered it right, lol.  I was just looking for opinions to see if I should pursue the OT eval. at this time.  My EI Coordinator is great, but the mention of another Evaluation made her a lil hisitant and I guess she just needs a concrete reason for her boss's to make it happen.  I'll see what she says tomm. and if we can get enough back-up.
