Watery Breastmilk?

So I EBF and pump while I'm at work so LO can still have BM bottles while I'm gone. LO slept his longest stretch ever last night from 9pm-6:30am and needless to say when I got up this morning my boobs were ready to burst. I feed him on the left one as it was more full and pretty painful. He wouldn't take the right one after that. I didn't pump on it because I didn't have time before I had to be at work. I pumped at 9:30 and the milk from the right breast was oddly colored. It seemed a little greenish...but it was almost like it was more watery than normal or something. Like it was lacking the cream. The milk from the left breast was the normal white color. Is it normal to have one breast produce more watery breast milk? Is it bad to feed it to my LO?

Re: Watery Breastmilk?

  • This happens to me a lot when I pump a breast that was really really full.  I really don't think it makes a difference, my milk looks different from day to day. DS still drinks it.  It is totally normal.
  • I haven't noticed a difference in color between breasts. But I have read that milk gets fatter/creamier later in the day.

  • That's probably foremilk.  It's normal for me to have a lot of watery (bluish) milk at first when I'm engorged.  The foremilk keeps baby hydrated.

  • I read somewhere that the fuller the breast is the less fat that is is in the milk, and that the less full the more fat.

I don't know how to explain it but this is true.  That is why you had more fat in the breast that he fed from and less in the one that was a little engorged.
