Question about going outside w/ babies...??

My boys are 7 weeks old today (born at 31 weeks) & I'm trying to determine how often it is okay to go out & about with them... for car rides/ stores/ etc?? They've been out with me & my husband for 3-4 hours yesterday at stores & seemed to do fine & last weekened we had them outside w/ us at a community street festival for 3 hours & seemed to be okay, I'm just wondering what the general rule is for going out with them?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Question about going outside w/ babies...??

  • Has your pedi given you any restrictions? You are lucky and it's summer and not cold/flu/RSV season so risk is minimal going out.  I would enjoy it and take them out as much as possible without distrupting a schedule.  I would however watch them like a hawk in stores because strangers love to touch babies.   Enjoy them sleeping anywhere while you can because when they get older it's not that easy to just "go".

My pedi said no where for 2 months (including family with large crowds) because they were born smack in the middle of winter when everyone is sick.  I went stir crazy but it was worth not getting them sick and ending up in the hospital with them.  I would LOVE a summer baby!

  • Aw, they are soooo cute! Congrats!

When mine came home, it was RSV season so we were on lockdown.

If I were you, I would go out but not to super crowded places like malls or church and not for long periods of time so that I didn't overstimulate them. And just be vigilant about NO one touching them!

  • I'd ask my pedi about your area's RSV risk right now.

We go out all the time with our LOs.  Ours were also full term, though.  Check with your pedi, then have fun!!

  • My twins were born at 34 weeks during the end of RSV season (April) and the Pedi said that it was fine to take them out in public (Target etc) but he said not to let people touch them or get too close. He actually suggested that I put one of those large bug screen things for over the double stroller on them when we were in store b/c then people would get the point that they couldn't touch them without us having to say something to them. I never did that though. What I DID do was I bought one of those Purell keychain things at Target and whenever someone went to touch a baby I would ask them to Purell their hands first. The ones that were offended walked away and never touched them- and the ones that weren't offended used it and I didnt' have to worry so much. :)
