The meaning of Sawyer is "wood worker," which would be a fun way to honor our dads, who are both wood workers, without overtly naming a baby after one or both of them.
After googling it, though, I found out that Sawyer was/is a character on LOST. I don't watch the show and never have...I'm wondering if the association causes a positive, negative or neutral association for you?
I know that if I like it, then I should just use it, but I do care about what other people are going to think, to an extent. TIA!
Re: LOST fans: WDYT of Sawyer for a boy?
Well I was going to say I'd avoid it, but you have an awesome reason to use it, so there goes my theory.
And there was a poster who has a Jack and a Sawyer and never watched the show.

I love the name Sawyer, H didn't so we didn't name our son that.
You may get a few "Are you a Lost fan" questions, but I get that about Dillon too (Matt Dillon/Bob Dylan). People think they are being clever. I do think in a few years that will die since the show is ending on Sunday.
As for the character Sawyer - he is a good guy and quite the ladies man. Nothing but positive as far as association goes towards the character name.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

He's a favorite character for a LOT of Lost fans. Which is a good thing in that it is a good connotation for the name, but a bad thing in that the character will be the first thing many people think of when they hear the name. When I hear of babies named Sawyer, I automatically think the parents got the name from Lost--which I realize is not always the case, it's just my first thought.
Huge LOST fan here. ?And I love the name Sawyer. ?I wouldn't name my child that because I don't have the excellent reason that you do (and my DH would just laugh because he would know that the idea for me came from LOST). ?But I really like your reasoning.
Nothing bad about Sawyer the character. ?I really like him. ?He is the gorgeous bad boy, who pretends to be bad but really isn't. :0)?
The Sawyer character is awesome, however technically his name is James. He only took the name Sawyer (the alias of the con man who caused his parent's murder-suicide) so he would never stray from the path to avenge their death.
I think it's a cool name, and if you love it you should use it! Just thought you should know how it relates to the show.
I am a HUGE Lost fan, and Sawyer is kinda a darker-bad a$$ character if you will. I think of it as a positive association. FYI: The Sawyer character on lost is a con man before the plane crash.
It's funny because a lot of the names I like, happen to be names of Lost characters like Kate, Jack, Ben, Michael, Walt, Ana, Libby, Charlie, Rose, Miles, and the Sawyer character's real name on the show James.
love LOST
love the name Sawyer
I am a Lostie and love the name Sawyer. I say go for it and not because I love the show.
Here's the thing...at least from what my mom told me...most of our parents used names from Soap Operas. That's why certain names were SO popular (like Jennifer way back when).
So, it doesn't really bother me to think someone got a name from a t.v. show...even if you didn't.
There are a ton of Olivia's on t.v. now. I love names from the show Private Practice (Lucas and Cooper being two of them). I'd never not use them just because they were on a popular t.v. show.
Ditto this! Our top boy name has always been Jack. Other top names are Kate (we call DD Audrey Cate), Claire, James, Charlie, and Ben. Good, classic names!
