Breastfeeding

alcohol and BF

I have a wedding to go to next month. I would like to be able to have a few drinks while I am there (since I haven't had one in almost 2 years!). DD currently gets BM whenever I am home, and when she is at daycare, it's half BM and half formula. If I drink while I'm at the wedding, does anyone know how long I would have to wait before it's safe to nurse her again? And will the alcohol leave my BM on its own, or will I have to "pump and dump" to get it back to being safe for her? Thank you for your help!

If you feel okay (not drunk), you can nurse. I usually wait until after nursing to have a drink, but it's probably not even necessary since one drink does not get me buzzed.

Your body will metabolize alcohol out of your milk just like it does with your blood.

  • They have proved that pumping and dumping is not necessary.  Whatever alcohol is in your system, there is the tiny amount in the breastmilk and it leave the milk as alcohol leaves you system, it does not stay in the milk.  What I do is, I pump right before the event, have enough bottles for while I am gone, and also have enough stored so that if I drank more than intended, he has enough good milk to drink until I am okay to breastfeed him. I do pump and dump if I still feel like I have alcohol in my system and it's time to feed him, I'm home with him and I normally would feed him, just to keep my milk production on track.  Not that I do this all the time, I have done it twice.  But as the previous post says, if you feel okay, you can nurse.
