s/o chemicals

This may sound a little nuts, but does anyone ever notice that organic produce sometimes tastes like total crap? Specifically the apples I've purchased from wegmans have been pretty bad. Like mealy, soft and not a lot of flavor.

Last night I told DH that chemicals make food taste better...haha!

We bought organic steak from Wegmans a couple of weeks ago and it was total CRAP.

  • I would imagine that it moves "slower" than the regular produce so it could taste funky. I think they can worry less about taste b/c people will buy organic just b/c it's organic. Just reason #101 I buy regular produce and just wash it extra well :)

  • Yes about the apples, I've noticed that too.  Although apples are extremely difficult to grow organically.  We get some in our CSA share, and they taste great, but they are totally disgusting to look at. 

    What was wrong with the meat?  Organic meat is usually a lot leaner than non-organic, so it's really easy to overcook it.  It also has a much stronger taste than non-organic.

    They spray produce at all stages - not just the surface once it is ready to be or actually picked. No amount of washing can help that.

    I cooked the steaks to a medium - they we so flavorless it was unbelievable! But I did buy another one to make tonight (we're trying to eat less red meat - so I bought one to split) Hopefully it will redeem itself! : )

    Sometimes it's just a bad cow. My parents are steak pros and sometimes they say they just get a bad cut/cow and no matter what you do it just won't taste good. ?

  • I noticed that about the apples as well.  We have bought the grass fed beef at Wegmans and it has tasted good.  Last week we bought grass fed beef from a local farmer and made burgers and they were so yummy!   We had the free range chicken breasts from Wegman;s the other night and they were really good too (not gamey, like I thought they might be), but they are very expensive.

  • I did notice that, I agree with PP that they might just sit a bit longer than regular apples.

    My favorite organic wegmans purchase is their field greens in the plastic packaging, they always seem to last much longer than the regular greens and they just taste better to me.

  • Huh, I've always really enjoyed the Wegmans organic beef.

    What kind of apples did you get? I buy the organic granny smith & like them

  • I always get Gala apples so maybe I'll try another kind next time.

    And YES - the chicken is soooo expensive. But it makes me more conservative with it. I make sure I freeze some instead of cooking it all and throwing what we don't eat away. So maybe it balances out : )

  • I agree about the field greens. The organic greens are so much better!!

    I prefer the organic meats. They have so much more flavor to me.

  • I LOVE organic produce so much better and I've never has an issue, but I now live in Florida and shop at Publix and SuperTarget for all of our organic produce, so can't compare Wegman's items.
