Ear infection help

My DD had a fever on Monday of 103.5. (she is 4) and so I brought her to Urgent care since it is not normal at all for her to run a fever. We had a foreign dr and I had the hardest time understanding him. What I got out of it was that her ear was a little pink so he gave her antibiotic and sent us on our way.

Now ever since that day, every 12 hours she gets a fever of at least 103. I give her Motrin and it goes down until 12 hours later. She just woke up from her nap and it was 104.3. She has already had 3 doses of antibiotics.

My question:

Shouldn't the antibiotics have kicked in already? She only has two more doses to go before she is finished with it. I am worried that it is something else.. My DH says I am a hypochondriac. LOL

Is it normal to still have a fever 3 days later after antibiotics?

Re: Ear infection help

  • I would take her to the pediatrician.
  • Her fever could be from a virus. The antibiotic they gave you might treat just the ear infection and the virus might go away on it's own. Does that make sense?

  • It sounds like the fever is from a virus, but I'd call your pediatrician to calm your nerves. But I remember reading a few people on here had children recently whose only symptom was a high fever (in the 103-104 range)

  • Often, it can take the entire course (or close to it) of an antibiotic for the infection to go away.  However, I would still call the pedi to ask what they think.  Hope she feels better soon.  We have definitely had our share of ear infections and they are not fun!
  • in my opinion and experience, yes, that antibiotics should have kicked in...

take her to your family doctor.
