rags vs unpaper towels

Do you keep cleaining rags seperate from other unpaper towels (like the ones you use for food)?

DH freaked out when I used a big towel to soak up an iced tea spill in our living room. He said that we should only use a rag or paper towel (real paper kind) for that, not a regular bath towel. All I had at the moment was a clean bath towel so that was what I used rather than running to get a rag. And of course I didn't want to use paper on that (I save paper for icky gross stuff).

I can see not using food towels on cleaning, but I don't really see a problem with using a bath towel on something as simple as water or iced tea. Its not gross IMHO. It isn't like the towel was a pristine white glorious thing, it was just a dark towel that was several years old.

Anyway, how do you handle various towels and messes?

Re: rags vs unpaper towels

  • its not gross. i do keep different towels for different purposes but they all get washed together, and if something could potentially be so bad a mess that the rag might need to be tossed, I have special rags for that too.

I'm with you and would have done the same thing. In fact the other day I spilled some water on carpet and there happened to be a bath towel two feet away so that's what I grabbed.

  • once you have a kid, esp one who may pee on the floor, you grab whatever is closest.  lol.

you learn this earlier when you have a DH who drinks a lot of red wine.

Or a DH who is just clumsy and messy.

  • I don't discriminate.
  • dh likes having separate types of towels too. crazy man.  I keep separate piles but really use them all for the same purposes... unless it is something that'll leave a serious stain (cleaning up paints, glues, car stuff, etc).

  • We have some old towels (they aren't rags per se, but we use them as such) that we use for gross purposes, like cleaning up cat pee, washing the car, and other potentially unsanitary things that I probably wouldn't want to use a kitchen or bath towel for.  But cleaning up food messes - I don't see a problem with using bath towels or kitchen towels for that.
