Help please! Hcg levels question

I can't remember which board I posted my backstory on b/c I've been lurking so much on the bump for the past 2 weeks. So, if the beginning is a repeat, my bad! :)

I went in for my first u/s when I was 7 weeks. All they saw was an empty sac, no baby, no yolk sac. My sac was measuring 5 weeks 3 days though, so that makes sense why we couldn't see anything. But then the u/s tech went on to talk for 15 minutes about how it could be a blighted ovum and if that was the case I would need a D&C, etc. She wasn't hopeful at all. She got us in to talk with the dr. on call and he was a little more hopeful, but he didn't want to do any blood work to check my levels b/c "it wouldn't help" and just wanted me to come back in a week later for a second u/s with my doctor. We couldn't wait that long and with the advice from a lot of friends, I went in to get my hCG levels checked. On Friday, they were 13,000. Yesterday at 6 weeks 1 day (if my u/s measurements were right) they were 18,000. My nurse said that 18,000 is good b/c they are going up. She said that my doctor wasn't alarmed b/c "when they get as high as 13,000, they don't go up as drastically." But, I have a friend who at 6 weeks 3 days was up to 27,000. So, I'm really confused. Is 6,000 "points" higher really okay? Does anyone have any more experience/knowledge than I do? I just need some hope to get me through until my next u/s on Monday!

  • At this point HCG numbers do you no good.

With my 3rd pregnancy I went in at 7weeks and we had an empty sac. I was to go in for a repeat u/s in a week but they checked my numbers again anways and did every 3 days and low and behold they kept going up. At an 8 week u/s though it was still an empty sac and was again at a 9week u/s. I had a D&C at 10 weeks and asked then why my numbers were still going up. Basically with a Blighted Ovum even though the egg/baby has stopped growing your placenta and uterus keep going along as if everything is fine, and so since your placenta is doing it's job that is why your numbers will still rise.

So, the best thing to do is have a repeat u/s and go from there. Best of luck!!

Kind of the same thing with me excpet I found out at the ultrasound at 10 weeks it was a blighted ovum, but my levels kept going up just the way they should, so really, don't stress about the hCG level.  So try to stay calm until the u/s cause that is your best evaluation at this point.  Good luck to you.  And crossing fingers that everything is ok.

  • Not to scare you but at this point your hCGs won't help you know the health of your pregnancies. My sister had hers tested at about 7-8 weeks and got a level of 43,000 then over 56,000 two days later. They discovered a blighted ovum at 10 weeks. :( Keep us posted on your u/s tomorrow!
