Allergy question

My LO was tested for allergies because of his eczema.  It turned out he did have an allergy to egg.  I've been egg free in my diet for about 6 weeks or so but haven't noticed any changes in the eczema.  In fact, it has gotten worse.  We're treating it in other ways right now.  My doctor did say at the beginning that me eliminating might not help at all (since it might not be the primary cause).  Do you think it would be ok for me to slowly add egg back in to my diet to see if it changes anything?  I'm thinking this as I really want ravioli for dinner.  I would 100% give it up of course if I thought it was helping  him but I'm tempted since it seems to have made no difference.  Thoughts?

Re: Allergy question

  • My DS tested positive for egg allergy and I wouldn't risk trialing it until he tests negative for it.  One thought process is the more exposure he has to it, the more severe his allergy can become.  Eczema is very difficult to pinpoint the cause of.  My son has 2 hotspots which our derm doesn't believe are food related so we treat them.  The best thing I've found is California Baby Calendula cream.  Good luck!

That's true and I didn't think of that (allergy becoming more severe).  I think I'll definitely stay away.  I'm actually thankful that it is just egg.  I imagine there are many other things much more difficult to give up.  I've heard quite a few people recommend California Baby Calendula cream but my pediatric derm. says only aquaphor or cetaphil.  I'm tempted to try that though since so many people say it works wonders.  Does your LO have pretty bad eczema?   I wish I knew the cause!

  • DS has some food intolerances and pretty bad eczema, but his pedi GI says not to bother testing for actual food allergies because those tests are notoriously unreliable in kids.  He says you get both false positives and false negatives and can get different results each time you test.  So do you think it's possible that the results weren't accurate?  Maybe you can talk to his pedi or the pedi derm. about retesting?

  • Sorry, one more thing -- do you have hard water?  We're just realizing that we do, and I hear that hard water can aggravate any skin problem, especially eczema, because it alters the skin's ph.  We're looking into installing a water softening system, so hopefully that will help DS.
