Help - DS has had a rough couple weeks or so at home and school

I can't figure out what is going on.  At home he's super whiney and crying a lot, especially around dinner time.  So not like him.  Not sure if this is a 5 y/o thing, I've heard kids can be very whiney around 4 to 5 y/o.  He just seems SO tired lately, ever since the weather got nicer outside.  He's not a napper, though and will not sleep over 10-11 hours a night.  If I put him to bed earlier, he's up earlier.  If he goes to sleep later, he's up at the same time no matter what.  He's tired at school by the end of the day, sometimes even earlier.  Today and Friday there were "incidents" around lunch time.  He's in school until 3:30, but lately his teacher has been saying he's exhausted by 3 pm.  I think he may be growing, so hopefully it's a short phase and he'll go back to his usual sweet self soon.

  • This may sound weird because you say he is tired by three ,but my sister when she was five hated to go to school because she was used to being with my mom so she would whine and try to get attention. At school she would lie down and say she needed to go home and sleep because she was tired. My mom started to take her to the park after school and let her run around as much as she wanted. She came home did home work, ate dinner, bathed, read a story with mom and fell asleep. She woke up refreshed and ready for school at school her attitude changed and she was super energetic. My mom kept the routine and it seemed to work.
  • How long has this been going on? Jayden went through a few rough weeks at school and he ended up with a staph infection, which explained his strange behaviors. If it's totally out of the norm for him to be this way, maybe take him to see the pediatrician.

How did you know he had a staph infection?  He seems healthy, just more tired than usual.  I've actually been trying to get him to lie down a bit after school b/c he was even more tired if he came home, rode his bike, at dinner, bath and then bed.  he was exhausted the next day.  So, now he has som quiet time when he gets home.  It started when spring hit, along with allergy season and more activities outside.

  • DS just went through a really cranky phase, about 2wks worth and then it was time for his 3yr well child check. I had the doc check his ears and sure enough he had an EI. No symptoms besides cranky and sleepy. He wasn't sleeping very well at night, but not waking up crying either so I didn't know it was pain/EI.

    Good luck!

Hmm, you could be onto something here.  Maybe his allergies caused an EI.  I will have to get that checked out (I would say I would ask him, but he will just say yes LOL).

DS's was caused by a bad cold he and I both got at the same time (sinus cold) and it went into an EI. I hope it's that easy for you.

  • Jayden ended up getting a huge knot on his stomach. Not saying that your DS may have staph, but just that he may be not feeling well. Seasonal allergies could certainly be the culprit!
